Gamow is the son of the famed physicist George Gamow, a co-author of the Big Bang Theory and the first to propose the genetic code.
Gamow's mother, Rho, was a ballet dancer; and it was in his mother's footsteps that the son first followed, joining the National Ballet Company after finishing high school at age 17.
Gamow hardly confines himself to the classroom and lab: he is an irrepressible outdoorsman.

Gamow's contribution to the astronomy-research is mainly concerning the origin of the Universe and the stars evolution.
Gamow used his knowledge of nuclear-reactions to interpret stellar evolution, collaborating with Teller on a theory of the internal structure of red giants, in 1942.

Gamow then decided to become a scientist and began his study of mathematics, physics, and astronomy.
There Gamow proposed a hypothesis that atomic nuclei can be treated as little droplets of so-called "nuclear fluid." These views led ultimately to the present theory of nuclear fission and fusion.
At this period Gamow also collaborated with F. Houtermans and R. Atkinson in attempts to apply his formula for calculating the rate of induced nuclear transformations to the so-called thermonuclear reaction in the interior of the Sun and other stars.

Consequently, Gamow's prediction in support of the big bang was not substantiated until 1964, when Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson made the accidental discovery for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1978.

Fired professor challenges recent dismissal in lawsuit   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Igor Gamow, who was dismissed by the Board of Regents in April as a CU-Boulder associate professor of chemical and biological engineering for "acts of moral turpitude," has filed a lawsuit against the University and the regents, challenging his termination process and requesting reinstatement.
Gamow alleges that during his Privilege and Tenure Committee hearing last September, CU officials withdrew sexual harassment claims made by Dana Ruehlman, Gamow's former research assistant, because those charges "were not credible or sustainable," the lawsuit states.
Ruehlman filed suit against CU in September 2001, claiming that Gamow had subjected her to "repeated forced sexual intercourse" between 1995 and 1997, that her submission to his demands was a condition of her continued employment, and that reporting the sexual harassment prompted retaliation.

CU is so committed, in fact, that in 2004 it fired Igor Gamow, a controversial professor and inventor who’d been a fixture on the Boulder campus for nearly thirty years — and had been a magnet for harassment complaints stemming from a series of incidents involving female staff and students stretching back to the 1980s.
His father, physicist George Gamow, was one of the early proponents of the “big bang” theory of the origin of the universe and a pioneer in DNA research; CU’s Gamow Tower is named after him.
Gamow could not be reached for comment on the verdict; he is now suing the university over his termination.

The regents voted 7-0 on April 15 to terminate the tenured electrical engineering professor from CU on the grounds of "moral turpitude." Gamow's dismissal was reportedly only the second dismissal of a tenured faculty member for cause in the university's history.
Yet Gamow's 11-page complaint calls Ruehlman's allegations and statements to police "prejudicial, unsubstantiated and untrue" and states her packet of information should not have been given to the regents because her charges were never prosecuted in criminal court.
Gamow said CU-Boulder Chancellor Richard Byyny called the earlier cases "stale" in 1997 and did not allow Gamow the opportunity to clear his name, despite full awareness of the facts, according to the complaint.

 The Gamow Bag
The Gamow bag, as named after Dr. Igor Gamow, is often a feature of aid stations high in the mountains.
The bag was developed after the idea in the 1980's that athletes should 'train low, sleep high' in order to produce more red blood cells to transport more oxygen to the muscles, which in theory makes an athlete faster and stronger.
Gamow invented 'The Bubble,' a pressurised chamber where athletes living at high altitude could go to train at the oxygen-enriched sea level of their competitors.

In his letter, Gamow challenges an April 11 story in the Boulder Daily Camera, in which staff writer Clint Talbott chronicles the claims of one of Gamow's alleged victims, Gretchen Hume, who publicly alleged in 1996 that she had been sexually assaulted by Gamow as an undergraduate in 1982.
Gamow, who began teaching at UCB in 1968, said he believes that CU officials decided at the last minute to not use Ruehlman's allegations against him during his September 2003 Privilege and Tenure Committee hearing, and that Ruehlman did not testify as planned.
Indicating that using Ruehlman's charges against Gamow in the dismissal process would have hurt the University's chances in her lawsuit against CU, Ruehlman's attorney, George Johnson, states in a legal brief that CU withdrew her claims "because it put uppermost its interest in preserving the opportunity to discredit [Ruehlman] in later court proceedings."
