Igor Larionov was already heralded as one of the top hockey players in the world when he finally made his NHL debut in October of 1989 at the age of 29.
Larionov led the Red Wings in assists with 49 and was tied for second on the team in points with 63 in 1998-99, but the team faltered in the post-season.
Larionov returned to the Detroit line up in 2002-03 and equalled his previous year point total of 43 and was instrumental in leading the Wings to first place in the Western Conference.

While Igor Larionov was drafted 214th overall in the 1985 Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks, it was not until October 5, 1989 that he made his NHL debut after finally being given permission to leave the Soviet Union.
In the playoffs that year, Igor led the Sharks with eight assists and co-led the team with nine points as the Sharks again advanced to the second round of the playoffs.
Igor's older brother, Evgeny, is a scout with the Dallas Stars.

Larionov centered the infamous KLM line — considered by many in hockey to be the greatest single forward line in the game's history — with Vladimir Krutov on his left and Sergei Makarov on the right wing.
When Larionov came to Detroit in 1996, the Winged Wheel was in full revolution and the Wings won three Stanley Cups, including back-to-back titles in 1997 and '98, then another in 2002, all with Larionov and a team with a heavy Russian influence.
Larionov played on the dominant Russian teams in the 1980s that won Olympic gold twice, and he and Krutov just missed being on the 1980 team that lost to the United States in the gold medal game in what is considered one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

Igor Nikolayevich Larionov (Russian: Игорь Николаевич Ларионов; born December 3, 1960 in Voskresensk, Soviet Union, now Russia) is a Russian former ice hockey player.
Incidentally, Brunflo was the same team that his former linemate in CSKA Moscow and the Soviet Union, Vladimir Krutov ended his career at ten years earlier.
At the forefront of the Soviet players' battle to win their freedom, Larionov was kicked off the national team by head coach Viktor Tikhonov after suspicion of defection.
