Igor Yevgenyevich Tamm (Russian И́горь Евге́ньевич Та́мм, also transcribed sometimes as Igor' Evgen'evich Tamm) (July 8, 1895 – April 12, 1971) was a Russian physicist.
Tamm was born in Vladivostok, Russian Empire (now Russia) in an Estonian family migrated to the Far East, studied at the grammar school in Elisavetgrad (now Kirovohrad, Ukraine).
Tamm was a student of Leonid Isaakovich Mandelshtam in science and life.

Despite the pressure to do so, Tamm never joined the Communist Party and after his brother was arrested and executed, he apparently kept a packed bag ready in case the secret police came for him, too.
Tamm joined the faculty at Moscow University in 1922 and from 1930 to 1941 he headed the department of theoretical physics.
Sakharov would later say that "Igor Tamm played the largest role in my life," adding that Tamm was the only scientist to influence his opinions on social issues.

Tamm graduated from Moscow State University in 1918 and taught there from 1924 to 1937.
In 1936 Tamm and Frank explained this phenomenon as the emission of light waves by electrically charged particles moving faster in a medium than the speed of light.
Tamm spent the latter decades of his career at the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute in Moscow, where he worked on methods for controlling thermonuclear fusion reactions.

Tamm was a student of Leonid Mandelstam and maintained, even during the most difficult years of Stalin’s rule, the Mandelstam school’s tradition of combining high professionalism with high moral standards.
However, in June 1948, Tamm himself was commissioned to help Yakov Zeldovich and his research team to study the feasibility of a thermonuclear, or hydrogen, bomb.
Tamm and several of his students, including Sakharov, formed a special auxiliary group at FIAN to work on a proposal for an H-bomb.

 Sakharov Is Tokamak's Originator - Physics Today December 2005
In collaboration with Igor Tamm, Sakharov wrote the first papers on the tokamak.
The papers were classified until 1956, when Igor Kurchatov reported them at a conference in Harwell, UK, and were subsequently published in the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy (Pergamon Press, 1961).
Because Sakharov and Tamm were working full-time on the development of a fusion bomb, Lev Artsimovich and Mikhail Leontovich were put in charge of work on the construction of a practical thermonuclear reactor in the USSR.

Sakharov, who recently received his Ph.D. under Tamm, followed him to Arzamas-16 to assist with the plans.
