In Igor Tudor’s time as a Croatian international, the defender has become the linchpin of his country’s barrier protection, which they will attempt to deploy to cool the ardour of sexier opponents in Group B of the Euro 2004 finals.

Comfortable and classy when deployed as a midfield prompter, the importance of the 36-times capped Tudor to his nation was evidenced when, ahead of the 2002 World Cup finals, Jozic claimed that his team had lost "20%" of their "capability" as a consequence of the defender missing out after ankle surgery.

But Tudor was quick to state his respect for the man who beat fellow Serie A stars Hernan Crespo and Andrei Schevchenko to the Golden Shoe for top European goalscorers - and the general strength and wit of Henrik Larsson's partnership with Chris Sutton.
While Tudor did not mention Sutton by name, there can be no doubt that the former Chelsea striker will test him to the limit, whether in the air, on the ground or in the mind - a quality that, bar the occasional flash from Hutchison's darker side, was sorely lacking from Scotland.
But Tudor's assessment of the relative strengths of our best national and club teams provides another stark warning of where our ropey national game is headed unless the Old Firm can find ways to bring more young Scots players through.
