Igor Volk, born April 12, 1937 in Gotwald, Kharkov Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, was a USSR cosmonaut.
He was selected as a cosmonaut on July 30, 1980, flew as Research Cosmonaut on Soyuz T-12 and retired in 1996.
Igor Volk is married and has two children.

Transported a crew comprising ship's commander V A Dzhanibekov, flight engineer S E Savitskaya and cosmonaut-research I P Volk to the Salyut-7 orbital station to conduct scientific and technical studies and experiments.
The original crew was Volk and Stankiavicius, with Levchenko and Shchukin as back-ups.
Both Levchenko and Shchukin died in 1988; Bachurin and Borodai were selected as the new back-up crew.

Volk was a glimpse of things which might have been: he was a Buran shuttle program pilot being flown in space to prove he would be able to pilot Buran back to Earth after an extended stay in space.
The Pamirs, the second Visiting Expedition to visit the Mayaks, included veteran cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov, Buran shuttle program cosmonaut Igor Volk, and Svetlana Savitskaya.
On July 25 Dzhanibekov and Savitskaya performed a 3 hr, 30 min EVA, during which they tested the URI multipurpose tool.

However, Igor Afanasyev, an expert on space technology, said communications satellites are now becoming heavier and more dependable and most telecommunications agencies already operate such satellites.
Afanasyev believes that there are no guarantees that Russia will be able to make three or four launches a year.
