Digimorph - Ctenosaura pectinata (Mexican spinytail iguana)
Ctenosaura is a member of Iguania (see also Phrynosoma), one of the two major squamate clades (the other being Scleroglossa, including Varanus and Shinisaurus).
Within Iguania, Ctenosaura resides in Iguanidae, the clade that includes chuckwallas (Sauromalus) and all other iguanas (see also Dipsosaurus dorsalis, the desert iguana).
Diagnostic features of Iguanidae include the position of the parietal foramen in the frontoparietal suture, the fusion of Meckel's groove, and the absence of palatine teeth (Frost and Etheridge, 1989).

The family Iguanidae has been subjected to many taxonomic discussions and rearrangements since 1989.
Nearly a decade later, molecular systematists argued that a single large Iguanidae was indeed justified.
While the debate continues, we herein regard the traditional Iguanidae as such, because there is considerable evidence to support such recognition, and because such recognition simplifies the taxonomy of the group.

Meghann Strain Mentor: Dr. James Schulte February 28th, 2006 The superfamily Iguania is comprised of New World lizards.
It has been proposed that due to the many variations within Iguanidae, it would be better divided into individual families, and the previous families Agamidae and Chamaeleonidae combined.
The number of subdivisions has been debated among researchers, however, leaving many opportunities for taxonomic research to be conducted.

Within the Iguanidae family, there is another whole genus of wonderful iguanas that I would like to introduce to you in this article.
Even so, factors such as low fertility rate, high number of introduced predators, and slow maturation to adulthood make it is nearly impossible for many Cyclura to maintain their numbers without serious conservation efforts and/or breeding facilities that introduce captive bred Cyclura into the wild.
Some long term Cyclura owners comment that the genus is the most intelligent of the entire Iguanidae family.
