Ihsahn: It was a way to show that I wrote all the material and recorded it in my studio; arranged everything; and I played most of it.
Ihsahn: No, but what I feel from my perspective — what I really owe the fans of the musical work that I’ve done (be it in Emperor, or Peccatum, or what I’m doing now) is to stay 100 percent honest in my expression, and follow my heart.
And with the Emperor reunion shows, and having one [Ihsahn album] to pick from [to play material live], I really don’t have the time or see the full point in going out [live] at this point of playing half the album, and the rest be old Emperor songs.

Ihsahn: I think, even though this album is very much built on the musical foundation we have as a band.

Ihsahn screams in a very cool rhythmic pattern here-- it is often his sense of rhythm that makes up for either cheesy lyrics, or the fact that the sound of his screams can get taxing after a while.

Ihsahn (From the Emperor fame) is of no exception, combining fl metal with progressive genius to craft what will likely be one of the top albums of 2006.
Ihsahn seamlessly blends together a staggering amount of different musical styles/genres: progressive metal, thrash, fl metal, symphonic metal, classic metal, and even a little bit of death metal.
Ihsahn was smart to put only the most brilliant and amazing tracks on the album and ruthlessly cut semi-decent and mediocre songs (better to have 9/9 incredible tracks than mar the masterpiece with 2-5 songs that people would end up skipping anyway and lower the album's overall quality).

When hearing about the fact that Ihsahn was recording a solo album, I have to admit I was quite excited and interested to see what he would come up.
Ihsahn, The Adversary is a return to his extreme metal roots with a lot of experimenting still intact that he delved into with later period Emperor and Peccatum.
Overall, “The Adversary” is an extremely worthy outing by Ihsahn and I have a feeling that when the dust settles it will remain one of my favorite albums of the year.

PyroMusic.net - Review of: Ihsahn - The Adversary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Even so, this is perhaps the best representation of the sheer diversity of Ihsahn's musical leanings to be found on "The Adversary." Although this song is appropriately dark, it is one that would hold appeal to listeners outside of metal.
Ihsahn also shows a mellow side on the morose and avant-garde "Astera ton Proinon." But this track is complemented by a much heavier chorus than "The Homecoming," creating an interesting paradigm shift that's a great representation of this artist's development as a songwriter.
Employing simultaneous duality between a vicious, raspy snarl and a solidly tuneful mid-baritone croon, Ihsahn's adept placement of vocal melodies on this particular track is quite extraordinary.

The Adversary - Ihsahn - Song Listings
When a vocalist for a well-known band provides a solo album -- either while he/she is still with the band or after leaving it -- the material might be a big departure from the band's work, a carbon copy of the band's work, or something in between.
In the case of former Emperor vocalist/lead guitarist Ihsahn, The Adversary is definitely an example of "something in between." This 2006 release, which is the Norwegian headbanger's first solo project, is neither a carbon copy of Emperor's fl metal nor a radical departure from it.
The fl metal that Ihsahn embraces as a solo artist is symphonic fl metal -- that is, a very melodic, intricate combination of fl metal, power metal, and/or progressive rock.

Ihsahn: “The main challenge was to get out of the experimental style of working that I’d been doing with Peccatum, because it’s very easy when you only work in the studio to fiddle around with keyboard sounds and plug-ins and making effects and working on different sound textures, but that doesn’t really make metal albums.

Emperor is a seminal and infamous Norwegian fl metal band that was formed in 1991, dissolved in 2001, and reformed in late 2005.

It was around 2000 when Samoth and Trym started to gravitate more towards death metal, while Ihsahn directed his musical exploration towards the more artistic and progressive side of extreme metal, as shown by his side project, Peccatum.

Flaws dissipate and become part of the album and the sheer eloquence that seems to involve much of the 9 tracks included here begin to sound natural and even necessary.
As a musician Ihsahn’s abilities are impressive; his vocal range is here mostly clean, and occasionally grand-fathery kind of like King Diamond’s, while his technical skills seem to have peeked in tracks like the above mentioned “Citizen” and “Panem Et Circenses.” The good greatly outweighs the bad in this Ihsahn’s first solo venture.

Here, Emperor mainman Ihsahn is joined by his wife Ihriel and her brother Lord PZ, with all three providing vocals and Ihsahn most if not all of the instrumentation.
Musically, there's a fair amount of Emperor-style fl metal, but by no means is this trio limited to that style, as classical influences are clearly heard throughout, along with plenty of experimentalism that (as is often the case with such efforts) straddles the line between genius and unwarranted complexity or pretentiousness.
Ihsahn followers expecting a second Emperor might be disappointed, but those into avant-garde extreme music would do well to check this band out.
