Ii Naomasa   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Naomasa was born in Hôda village in the Inasa district of Tôtômi province and was first known as Toramatsu.
Naomasa was afterwards awarded Sawayama in Ômi Province (worth some 180,000 koku) but died in 1602, evidently as a result of his Sekigahara wound.
Naomasa was considered one of Ieyasu's great captains and was highly regarded by his master.

 LILLIPUT - Ii Naomasa
Ii was well known for his valor, and in any given battle would usually be found where the fighting was at its most intense: Naomasa was no stranger to being wounded.
Sekigahara was to be the most loyal veteran's last campaign: as the battle drew to a close, he was wounded in the left upper arm/ shoulder by a shot from a detachment of ninja mercenaries who were armed with large-bore, wall gun-like arquebuses.
Naomasa would be ably succeeded by his younger son, Naotaka (only ten at the time of Sekigahara), who distinguished himself at the siege of Osaka in 1615--virtually indistinguishable at first glance from his late father save for the ochre lacing of his armour!.

The Story of Hikone Castle Town
Ii Naomasa, the founder of the line, was a native of present-day Shizuoka prefecture and a close ally of Tokugawa Ieyasu since 1578.
Ii Naotake's first priority on assuming control of the province, however, was to complete the construction of the castle and surrounding town.
While the Ii family continued to reside in the castle, indeed the elected mayors of Hikone until recently were direct descendants of Ii Naomasa, many former high ranking samurai appear to have left the town shortly after 1868.

War of Emperor Meiji versus Shogun Tokugawa, 1863-1890
On March 24, 1860, the Tokugawa shogunate's 'Prime Minister' Ii Naosuke, Lord of Hikone -- descendant of the great Tokugawa General Ii Naomasa of 1600's -- was assassinated in Edo, near the Tokugawa castle.
Ii himself probably have died of a gunshot -- the sniper was really good -- but Sano cut his head anyway as samurai did to criminals.
Ii deserved getting assassinated a hundred times or so, according to a lot of Edoites at the time; his years had been overloaded with persecutions, incarcerations, exiles, and confiscations that even himself had lost count of.

Born "Toramatsu," in Iidani, Totomi in 1561, Naomasa's father Naochika was killed for suspected treason against his lord, Imagawa Yoshimoto.
Forced to flee, Naomasa was raised by families other than his own, until he serendipitously attracted the attention of Ieyasu while the later was hawking in Hamamatsu, and was taken in by him in 1575.
Naomasa and his "Red Devils" would fight valiantly, mainly against the Shimazu, from whom Naomasa would receive a bullet wound.

Ii Naomasa (1561-1602), a trusted retainer of Tokugawa Ieyasu, always dressed himself and his army in red armour, and became known as the 'Red-Outfit'.
Ii was well known for his courage and in most battles would usually be found where the fighting was at its most intense.
This was especially the case at the battle of Sekigahara (1600), where he led the by-then infamous "Red Devils" in the opening charge of the battle.

Samurai: The Great Warlords of the "Sengoku"
The latter is somewhat disconcerting as the armour belonging to and worn by Ii Naomasa survives to this day in the Ii family collection.
Combining both towering wooden wakidate sheathed in gold leaf, and a sumptuous fall of yak hair attached to the top of the kabuto, this kabuto is unique in that it is apparently reinforced with what appears to be a secondary medial plate, though it may very well be just a thicker single plate.
I selected the kabuto of II Naomasa and MAEDA Toshiie for this article as examples of the prevailing forms of the headgear of the Japanese warlord of the second half of the 16th century.

After the battle, Ii Naomasa, a loyal and important general of Tokugawa Ieyasu, was awarded the castle site and city for his role at the battle of Sekigahara.
As Sawayama Castle had been destroyed in 1601 during the aftermath of the battle, Ii Naomasa planned to construct his own castle on the same site as Sawayama but passed away in 1602 due to complications arising from the wounds he received at the battle before he could start his project.
This feat was accomplished by Ii Naosuke, the thirteenth lord of Hikone and head of the shogunal governing body.

Hikone Castle was built by Ii Naomasa's son Ii Naotaka, who petitioned the Tokugawa Shogunate to move his base from Sawayama mountain down to its current location on a hilltop directing adjacent to Lake Biwa.
