Tokushima (徳島) [1] is the capital of Tokushima prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Japan.
Tokushima became an important city largely because of its strategic position surrounded by rivers, and because of its indigo.
Tokushima is also famous for its ramen noodles and its wonderful strawberries, and for the sudachi (a small round green citrus fruit with a lime-like flavour).

The territory of the Ikeda parish covers about a quarter of the rural mountain area of Tokushima Prefecture and stretches from Ehime Prefecture in the west to Kagawa Prefecture in the north, to the parishes of Naruto and Tokushima in the east, and to Kochi Prefecture in the south.
In 1962 Ikeda was elevated to the status of a parish with a resident priest.

Tokushima city, an old port town, is the commerce and communication hub of eastern Shikoku.
North of Tokushima is Naruto, the terminus of the Naruto O-hashi bridge and the departure point for excursion boats to the wild Naruto Kaikyo straits.
The coastline along the Inland Sea is punctuated with numerous harbors, capes, and promontories while the remainder of the shore is generally mountainous, with the exception of the relatively flat coasts of Naruto and Ashizuri.

Ikeda (池田), also Awa-Ikeda (阿波池田), is a small town on the island of Shikoku, Japan.
Awa-Ikeda Station is along the JR Dosan Line, which burrows across the heart of Shikoku from Kubokawa and Kochi through the Oboke and Koboke gorges to Tadotsu and Takamatsu.
The JR Tokushima Line also terminates here, the trip from Tokushima taking about 2 hours (¥1,580) by local train.

IKEDA, Japan, April 29 (Kyodo) -- Fumiya Tsuta, who led the Ikeda high school to three national titles as its manager, died of lung cancer at a hospital in Ikeda, Tokushima Prefecture, on Saturday, his family said.
A Tokushima native, Tsuta first gained nationwide fame when he steered the Ikeda school to a runner-up finish at the national invitational baseball tournament in the spring of 1974 with only 11 players on his roster.

The walk through the Ikeda neighborhoods was fun, and we saw a nice playground with a giant slide filled with energetic kids.
While we were in Tokushima, we found out that one of Kumiko's friends had a baby just a few days ago, so we went to a department store to buy a gift.

Oh, and I've also gotten some pretty heartening news lately--there are more JETs in the area than I thought (9 in Miyoshi-gun alone; Miyoshi-gun is made up of 6 or 7 towns, one of which is Ikeda-cho), and they're a pretty tightly-knit community.
Also, a new supermarket opened up in Ikeda, the largest in the area, and we can get flour tortillas there--so that's a huge relief, because vegetarian food won't be hard to come by.
I also came across a couple of communities for Tokushima JETers--a Yahoo!

So far, I know this much--it's more rural than I expected.
It's a 16,000-person town (about 1/3 the size of the suburb I currently live in), in the district of Miyoshi, in the prefecture of Tokushima, on the northeastern side of the island of Shikoku, the smallest of the 4 main Japanese islands.
It's very varied geographically, but the climate's warm and dry.

I will eventually, and nearly every other Tokushima ALT who's left Japan has stopped already...but I started this before I came to Japan, to talk about my preparations and feelings, and I feel like this won't be a complete encapsulation of my experience if I don't talk about how I feel now that it's over.
This evening is dinner with the westie ladies who'll be around, and Ikeda's Awa Odori.
Three mornings from now, I'll have left Ikeda and Tokushima and will be in or near Osaka.
