The Ikedaya Jiken (池田屋事件), also known as the Ikedaya Affair or Ikedaya Inn Incident, was a famous armed encounter between the Ishin Shishi, the anti-shogunate forces from Choshu (now Yamaguchi) and the Shinsengumi, the bakufu's special police force on July 8, 1864 at the Ikedaya inn in Kyoto, Japan.
The Ishin Shishi were using the Ikedaya as a staging point for their forces, with a plan to set fire in Kyoto and capture Matsudaira Katamori, the daimyo of the Aizu clan whose duties included policing Kyoto at the time.
As for the Ikedaya itself, it was destroyed in the battle.

After the succesful raid of the Ikedaya, the Shinsengumi were awarded monetary compensation.
On the night of the Ikedaya riot according to Nagakura's "Shinsengumi Tenmatsuki" the exposure of 20 or more Choshu patriots was a chance occurence, there is no mention of a prior search or guidance of Yamazaki Susumu.
With the way Nagakura had described the Ikedaya raid, it also throws a doubt whether Yamazaki Susumu was even involved at all.

All i know about the Ikedaya affair is that it took place at night in 1864 and they just raided the hotels and slaughtered many members of choshu and satsuma clans.
During the Ikedaya raid he began to cough up blood and fainted, however, he survived, He joined Isami Kondous Tennen Rishin Ryu dojo at age 9 and was an accomplished swordsman by the age of 15.
This historical event, known as the Ikedaya Incident, represented a major triumph for the group and marked a turning point for the bakufu disturbances that were to follow.

Kyoto was where the emperor resided, and the emperor tended to support the outside han; an earlier example of an emperor fueling a rebellion against the ruling clan is Go-Shirakawa during the Genpei War, 1183-1185, depicted in the Tale of the Heike.

Historically, the Shinsengumi were a group of swordsmen who swore an oath to protect the shogunate during the last years of the Tokugawa era against the anti-shogun ronin from Choshu.
The anime chronicles (rather liberally) the events leading up to the Ikedaya Affair in 1864.
Many of the characters in the anime were historical figures, and a number of the events did take place.

He was the 2nd youngest member in the group with Todo Heisuke being the youngest.
It was rumored that his tuberculosis was discovered when he coughed blood and fainted during the Ikedaya Affair, but some sources say that he contracted the disease after that.
Both are reasonable, as tuberculosis can kill quickly (weeks), or very slowly (many years).

The name of the inn IS actually listed in the anime (Eventhough I could not read that, I could read "Ikedaya.") Also, Kenshin does NOT have the complete cross-shape scar till Dec (lunar calendar), 1864.
The Ikedaya Affair took place in June (lunar calendar) 1864.
