Iklwa could be used both in melee and as throwing spears.
Warriors were forbidden from throwing it, which would disarm them and give their opponents something to throw back (anyone who did not have his spear after a battle would be killed).

According to legend, the iklwa was developed by Shaka, who wanted his warriors to engage their enemies at close range, and not simply toss their long spears from a distance, leaving them unarmed.

The knob kerrie (iwisa) was a weapon common to the Zulu people, it was formed from the heaviest and hardest wood available and was often carved and decorated.
The stabbing spear was called by the Zulu people iklwa, as a reference to the noise that the spear made when being removed from flesh.
It was approximately 25.4 cm (10 inches) long, with a broad blade made from iron, and was the preferred weapon of the Zulu Warrior.

A couple of Zulus throw their iklwas in the film "Zulu", but that certainly wasn't standard battle doctrine at the time.
As for iklwa, it was developed by Chaka to counter the loss of spears.
The introduction of iklwa - short staff, long swordlike spearhead meant that it was horribly unbalanced for throwing but a superb weapon for melee.
