Ikutaro Kakehashi (梯 郁太郎 KAKEHASHI Ikutarō) was born in Osaka on February 7th, 1930, founder of the Roland Corporation.
During the 1950s, Ikutaro Kakehashi, repaired electronic organs and created new prototype organs, all the while running an electrical appliance shop.
Ikutaro Kakehashi now assumes the role of Special Consultant, supporting Roland management with his extensive experience and connections.

Kakehashi always had a globally oriented business sense, and in 1968 founded Hammond Japan, a joint venture of Ace Electronic Industries and the legendary Hammond International Company.

Kakehashi was offered a part-time position in a watch repair business, but after a few months he had to leave when he asked to be taught everything in a few months, thus attempting to short-circuit the traditional seven-year apprenticeship.
Kakehashi had originally designed the RE100 as a machine to reproduce long announcements, but he became aware that — while they were prone to poor performance — tape-echo units such as the Echorec and the Echoplex were becoming popular with musicians.
Kakehashi claims that it was the first musical instrument to contain one of those new-fangled microprocessor thingies but, at first sight, it seemed no more interesting than any of a host of other manufacturers' rhythm boxes.

Kakehashi viewed this as a natural stage in the evolution of the guitar, from its acoustic beginnings, through the rapid development of the electric guitar in the 1930s, '40s, '50s and '60s, to the next level, wherein each string can be treated as a separate instrument.

"Ikutaro Kakehashi was not only the founder of Roland (in 1972), 12 years before that he'd already founded Ace Electronics Industries in Osaka.
He was to be responsible for the development and design of the Ace-tone combo organs but eventually left the company in 1972 (the very same year he founded Roland).
From what I understand this company built and released the Ace-tone GT-7 portable organ as early as 1971, some 3-4 years before they built the Hammond X-5 organ for the Hammond company in the States!
