Il Redentore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Il Redentore, more properly Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore (Church of the Most Holy Redeemer), is Andrea Palladio's great domed church on Giudecca, one of the islands of Venice.
The Redentore was built in thanksgiving for deliverance from the plague that decimated Venice from 1575 to 1576, in which some 46,000 people, 25-30 per cent of the population, died.
The Festa del Redentore remains a major festival in the Venetian calendar, celebrated on the third Sunday in July.

Redentore Church - Andrea Palladio - Great Buildings Online
The Redentore Church was founded to call upon the Redeemer to deliver the city of Venice from a serious outbreak of the plague from 1575-1576.
The church is sited on the island of the Giudecca, somewhat remote from the heart of Venice, but in a position where it is clearly visible from the Piazetta di San Marco.
The spiritual implication is reinforced by a physical rise in the level of the crossing and choir, as the nave is above the ground level of the exterior.

Social stratification is down played as everyone travels across the bridge in an attempt to feel the spiritual power that stopped their common history's suffering and even after the celebration people will remember the day that everyone was equal (Gradante 1986).
Due to this, Festa del Redentore is a ritual used “in the maintenance of social solidarity” (Burns and Laughlin, Jr., 1979:250).

According to ANSA and Il Gazzettino, a single vandal used a hammer to smash an ornate capitol (called a capitello) atop one of the columns flanking the Palazzo Ducale last Sunday around 10:30PM.
The previous evening on La Giudecca, Palladio's masterpiece, Il Redentore, was victimized by someone who "repeatedly hit the statues of St. Mark and St. Francis of Assisi, severing three of their hands and leaving gashes over their bodies" according to an AP newswire account.
It's said that the authorities have not yet connected the two incidents, though with major acts of vandalism so incredibly rare in Venice, and these two attacks coming in two days on religious symbols, it can't be a coincidence.

It was during one of the regular plagues that afflicted Venice that the Senate decreed that a monumental church would be constructed to the Saviour (Il Redentore) as a plea to lift the curse.
Designed by Palladio in 1577, Redentore, along with San Giorgio Maggiore, dominates the Giudecca canal.
It was clearly succesful since the plague broke in 1578, however, it is also one of the most revolutionary pieces in Palladio's oevre, which reformulated the 'composite' church.

One of the first applications of Mannerism to the decorative arts and to architecture is seen in the work of Giulio Romano at the Palazzo del Tè, Mantua(1525-1535, Italy.) The handling of decoration and space in Michelangelo's plans for the Laurentian Library (1524-1559, Florence) is also Mannerist in style and concept.
A good example of a building for this type of subject is the one done by Andrea Palladio, the Il Redentore in Venice.
In fusing the to different space Palladio was able to achieve the mixture of a central space and the linearity of the space of a basilica.

The architect Andrea Palladio (VeniceWord International 1999) began the church that was dedicated to the Redeemer, Il Redentore, on the Guidecca Island (Henderson and Thompson 1997).
