In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Il Trittico
Despite the limitations of the form, Il Trittico is still Puccini and has moments of his gloriously soaring melody, emotional verity, and melodramatic theatricality that make it worth the occasional production.
Il Tabarro is pure melodramatic verismo : passion, infidelity, and jealousy are expressed and then resolved through an act of murder.
Il Tabarro is given a simple, almost abstracted production, in which the floor of the stage becomes the deck of the barge on which the principals live.

Il trittico - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Il trittico (The Triptych) is the title to a collection of three one-act operas, Il tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi, by Giacomo Puccini.
As a whole, Il trittico is quite balanced.
Il tabarro, the first act, is very dark and brooding, full of the violence and grit associated with verismo opera.

The overall impression is that Il Trittico present impeccably prepared, technically excellent, beautifully integrated and thoroughly reliable performances which somehow just fail to inspire in the way that their rivals' readings do.
Il Trittico are generally at their best in the fleeting, fitful scherzi which zip past in a suitably breathless way.
In Il Trittico's hands, however, there is insufficient light and shade, variation of pace and dynamic contrast to bring these four marvels fully to life.

 Il Trittico  -  Giacomo Puccini
Puccini's Il Trittico is a rather catch-as-catch-can collection of three one-acts that have virtually no direct connection to one another.
Il Tabarro is pure melodramatic verismo: passion, infidelity, and jealousy are expressed and then resolved through an act of murder.
Visually, each of the three is produced without any attempt to bridge them, an appropriate decision in view of their unconnectedness.

Full of the ambience of the lives of the bargees on the River Seine at the beginning of the 1900's, Puccini originally engaged his friend, Ferdinando Martini to write the libretto for the first of the trio of operas based on Gold's play, to be called Il Tabarro.
However, Martini proved to be a very slow producer, and eventually, Puccini changed his mind and engaged Giuseppe Adami, with whom he had written La Rondine, who had probably been waiting in the wings for this opportunity: he delivered a completed libretto to the composer in just two weeks.
Il Trittico was unable to have its premiere in Italy because of the fact that so many opera artists were involved in the war effort, so Puccini arranged for the work to premiere in New York, although he was unable to be there himself because of the war raging in Europe.

Beginning with the darkest, Il Tabarro - The Cloak - is a classic tale of doomed illicit love, set on a barge moored at a Paris quay.
Giorgetta, unable to sleep, returns on deck and asks to be enfolded in Michele's cloak, once the symbol of his protection - only to discover that it now covers the body of her lover.
Il Tabarro contains perhaps the loveliest music of the three operas: lush, sweeping tunes reminiscent of Tosca in places.

In fact, although the complete Trittico was given a few times at various opera houses, first 'Suor Angelica' and then also 'Il Tabarro' were quietly put aside and the more popular 'Gianni Schicchi' was teamed with short operas by other composers.
Fortunately, the impressionistic score of 'Il Tabarro' has made its way onto opera house schedules again - not on its own as it's only a good fifty minutes long - but as part of a double bill with Cavalleria Rusticana or Pagliacci, 'Gianni Schicchi', or other one-act operas.

Taken at a leisurely pace, allowing each passing beauty to be savoured, Il Trittico managed to wring every last drop of emotion from this wonderful piece whilst playing with great refinement and particular sensitivity to its dynamics.
