Topic: Il deserto rosso

  Untitled Document

Michelangelo Antonioni--a flawed legacy Part 2
His recognition of the psychological and moral concerns of middle class protagonists is sensitive and evocative, but the underlying subtext is that there is no way out of their dilemmas.
These final comments attempt to demonstrate that Giuliana has somehow found a way to adapt to the social environment in which she is trapped.
Although the trilogy (L’Avventura, La Notte, L’Eclisse) and Il Deserto Roso expanded the international audience for Italian movies, Antonioni’s movies increasingly tended to luxuriate in the dilemma of their protagonists.

Some consider L’Avventura, La Notte (1961), and L’Eclisse (1962) a trilogy (or, with Il Deserto rosso, a tetralogy) of sorts, largely because of a consistency of style, social setting, theme, plot and character (especially the roles played by the ubiquitous Monica Vitti).
But it is worth mentioning that a fundamental element of "the trilogy" is Antonioni’s increasing interest in the abstraction of space: for instance, the shot of the church in the deserted village in L’Avventura; the opening shot of La Notte that tracks down the Pirelli building; and the final seven minute montage of L’Eclisse.
Il Mistero di Oberwald (1980) is an abrupt swing away from epistemological preoccupation.

Harris said that Il Deserto Rosso had to be completed without him and a double was used for his character in some of the long shots.
After a neorealist period (Il grido),Antonioni begins his movies dealing with incommunicability with "l'avventura" in 1960,continues with "la notte" (1961) and "l'eclisse"(1962).This trilogy is in fl and white and features Monica Vitti, his favorite actress -although in "la notte" she's only supporting, the main part being played by Jeanne Moreau-.
