Opera: 'Pastore,' At Mostly Mozart - New York Times
''Il Re Pastore,'' which a 19-year-old servant named W. Mozart wrote in honor of an archduke's visit to Salzburg, is not the composer's most successful effort in the stiffly formal genre known as opera seria - ''Idomeneo'' and ''La Clemenza di Tito'' both overshadow this two-act ''dramma per musica.
One of the duties of a court composer in the 18th century was to write operas that flattered and glorified the aristocracy, usually by dramatizing the legend of some monarch's magnanimous acts.
''Il Re Pastore,'' like other works of its peculiar type, aims to achieve an exalted style through vocal virtuosity of a kind that all but died with the practice of castrating promising young singers.

The text selected, Il Re Pastore written in 1751, deals with the conquest of Alexander the Great and the installation of King Abdalonimus to the throne there.
The overture, originally scored for oboes, horns, trumpets, and strings is a vigorous piece, conventionally sluggish in harmonic activity.
The Il Re Pastore overture of W.A. Mozart proves an excellent opportunity to introduce students to the performance requirements of classical compositions.

Il re pastore was followed by a brief hiatus from the stage; during this time he produced numerous concert arias and concertos, as well as the "Paris" Symphony.
Even while regularly producing operas, he was simultaneously building a rich body of work that included chamber music, works for solo piano, choral works, symphonies, and concerti.
And, while Mozart's late masterpieces may eclipse his earlier works a bit, they are not the only works that have proven worthy of revival; in recent years, it has been possible to see Bastien und Bastienne, Mitridate, Lucio Silla, La finta giardiniera, and Il re pastore on stages around the world.

Written in 1775, in tribute to Archduke Maximilian, youngest son of Empress Maria Theresa, Il re pastore gives little hint of the dramatic talent Mozart would later develop.
To interpret Il re pastore as a rite-of-passage opera is perhaps fanciful.
Excepting Bronder's laboured coloratura, Il re pastore is exquisitely sung.

It is for this reason that Mozart's II Re Pastore is described on its title page as a 'serenata' rather than an opera.
Had Il Re Pastore been able to receive a full staging in Salzburg, he may well have made the same distinction 16 years earlier.
In the rhythmic energy and drive of the overture it is not hard to imagine Alexander the Great's army laying siege to foreign lands, but as soon as we encounter the shepherd Aminta we enter an entirely different world.

Cupid's arrows are indistinguishable from the arrows of war, and they fly around the stage and auditorium of the Linbury, where the director/designer John Lloyd Davies makes much of the correlation in Il re pastore, the oldest of Mozart's "young" operas, premiered when he was 19.
His single-set design for Il re pastore presents us with a physical golden framework in which the drama unfolds according to 18th-century conventions.
At the close of Il re pastore, Mozart glimpses his future in an ensemble of amazing individuality.

Il re pastore can be said to be a work of transition for Mozart in several respects.
The music is noticeably more in his own style than in the stage works that preceded it (Lucio Silla, Ascanio in Alba and La finta giardiniera) whilst testing the limits of 18th-century operatic convention.

He now had the ability to vary each aria so that in the entire score of Il re pastore there is not a single song which is formally like any other in its structural layout.
This is important because Mozart's two act Il re pastore is described as a serenata or 'serenade', referring to a tradition which was still flourishing at the court in Vienna in which the elements of staging were minimized or even done away with altogether.
Il re pastore was Mozart's first work in this new synthesis and the last of his early theatrical compositions.

Both composers elected to set texts by the all-powerful librettist Pietro Metastasio (1698-1782), Fischietti choosing Gli orti esperidi (it was premièred in Salzburg on 22 April 1775) and Mozart the aforementioned Il re pastore (premièred one day later).

A year before the U.S. was born, a 19-year-old boy wrote an opera about a wise ruler who gives way to the will of the people.
You could probably draw a moral from the fact that, 200-plus years later, though we're still performing Mozart's little pastoral fable, the concept it embodies has been reduced to a bitter joke.
Which is why, sensibly, Mark Lamos's witty, light-handed production of Il Re Pastore barely tries to plumb the drama's serious depths, instead letting us come at the seriousness (which is both moral and musical) through tactics that literally amount to fun and games.
