Ilam is named for Ilam Hall in Staffordshire, England, the birthplace of John Watts-Russell (1826-1875).
Watts-Russell sold Ilam in 1866 and is buried in the upper Riccarton Church graveyard.
Ilam Homestead burnt down in 1911 and was rebuilt by Edgar Stead.

"Ilam, nearly five miles NW by N of Ashbourn, and twelve miles ESE of Leek, is a small secluded village, picturesquely seated in the vale of the Manyfold, and within half a mile of its junction with the deepest, narrowest and most romantic part of Dovedale.
He resides at Ilam Hall, a large and elegent mansion, in the Tuscan and Gothic styles of architecture, with towers and turrets, erected on the site of the old hall in 1821, by the present owner, who purchased the estate from the late John Port, Esq, father of the present vicar.
Ilam Cross in the centre of the village was erected in 1840 in memory of Mrs Watts Russell.

I have walked in the gardens at Ilam homestead since I was child and always enjoyed their beauty, but the gardens had a new meaning for me after I walked through them with Peter Cadigan while he talked about the azaleas and rhododendrons and about the development of the site by the University of Canterbury.
The evergreen azaleas are small and at Ilam are used as an edging for the beds of larger deciduous azaleas.
It was taken to Ilam to pump water for domestic supply from an artesian bore near the water wheel to a water tank on a tower beside the homestead.

Watts-Russell, who formerly lived at Ilam Hall which was presented to the National Trust in 1934 as a Youth Hostel by Sir Robert McDougall The Hall is still an imposing and stately structure though a substantial part of it was demolished when it became a youth hostel.
Also in the grounds of Ilam Hall is the ancient shrine of St. Bertram who is reputed to have lived as a hermit in these parts in Anglo-Saxon times and to have converted the district to Christianity.
Ilam is a natural starting point for exploring the Manifold Valley; there is a fine stretch of the Manifold in the grounds of the Hall where, beneath the cliffs, the river regains its overland course after the subterranean journey from higher upstream.

TEHRAN, Dec. 19 (MNA) –- Morteza Karami, MP from Ilam, finally passed away on Sunday morning after remaining in a coma for the past ten days at a hospital in Tehran.
MP Karami’s body will be carried by his counterparts from the door of the Iranian parliament on Monday morning so that the MPs can pay their last respects to him, Adel Azar, another Majlis deputy from Ilam said.
