  GENUKI: Ilam
"Ilam, nearly five miles NW by N of Ashbourn, and twelve miles ESE of Leek, is a small secluded village, picturesquely seated in the vale of the Manyfold, and within half a mile of its junction with the deepest, narrowest and most romantic part of Dovedale.
He resides at Ilam Hall, a large and elegent mansion, in the Tuscan and Gothic styles of architecture, with towers and turrets, erected on the site of the old hall in 1821, by the present owner, who purchased the estate from the late John Port, Esq, father of the present vicar.
Ilam Cross in the centre of the village was erected in 1840 in memory of Mrs Watts Russell.

Watts-Russell sold Ilam in 1866 and is buried in the upper Riccarton Church graveyard.

In a dominant position in the centre of the village of Ilam in the Peak District National Park in Staffordshire, is a striking and beautiful Victorian monument, in the style of an Eleanor Cross.
It is modelled on one of the crosses which Edward I had erected at each stopping place of the body of his queen, Eleanor of Castile, on its progress from Nottinghamshire, where she died, to its tomb in Westminster Abbey, in 1290.
In the case of Ilam Cross, it was built as a memorial to Mary the wife of Jesse Watts-Russell, the squire of Ilam, when she died in 1840.

Jesse Watts-Russell was also responsible for the curious appearance of Ilam village, which he rebuilt in a Swiss style on a slightly different (and steeper) site, because the surrounding countryside reminded him of the Alps.
In the centre of the village is a small-scale copy of an Eleanor Cross that Watts-Russell erected in 1840 in memory of his wife.
Ilam is not recorded in the Domesday Survey, but the existing fabric indicates that there was a church as well as a settlement here at that time.

Mary Watts-Russell commissioned the memorial to her father, which is such a magnificent feature of the church at Ilam, from the greatest English sculptor of his day, Francis Chantrey, another important contact in the history of Ilam Cross.
Derick’s design for Ilam was however significantly different from his rejected design for Oxford, probably indicating a sensitivity to location and, perhaps, respect for Jesse’s personal taste.
At Ilam, the choice of stones was doubly disastrous The basins for the spring water and the first four courses of stone are constructed of a local triassic material, probably from a quarry a few miles away at Stanton, a sandstone cemented with barite.

Born at Ilam Hall, Staffordshire, England, John Charles Watts-Russell and his wife Elizabeth arrived in Canterbury on the Sir George Seymour in 1850.
Something of the splendour of Ilam in its earliest years was recorded by Lady Barker, the author of "Station Life in NZ" who described it as the most charming place she had then seen with the Avon winding through the grounds laid out in English fashion.
Mrs Watts-Russell was remarried to A.R. Creyke and the Ilam land was subdivided in 1880.

Made by George Clews and Co Ltd, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, these earthenware lidded jugs, covered in a matt dark green glaze, are simplified copies of the great bronze flagons from Basse-Yutz, Eastern France (on show in Room 50).

The school was built, in the same Apline style as the rest of the Ilam, in 1857 by Jesse Watts Russell.
Ilam is an interesting 'estate' village that was moved in the 1820s by the new owners of Ilam Hall, the Watts Russell family.
They felt that the tenants' cottages spoilt the view and so, when they rebuilt the Hall, they built the 'new' model village of Ilam in Alpine style just out of sight but left the church where it still sits today midway between the Hall and village.
