ILCHESTER, Somerset, England, UK   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
A town with much history, Ilchester, originally called Lindinis (meaning "Little Marsh"), was a strategic Roman fort and major regional settlement (hence 'chester') on the river Yeo at the important junction of the Fosseway and the Bristol to Dorchester roads (now the A303 and the A37).
Ilchester was a walled and gated town and boasted six churches, a nunnery, friary and a leper hospital in Medieval times.
It was the County Town of Somerset in the 1700's and the famous Ilchester Gaol - in use from 1166 to 1843 - was home to the County Gaol.

Britannia: Narrative History of Roman Somerset
The region, we now know as Somerset, was inhabited by people from three different tribes at the time of the Roman conquest of Britain (AD 43).
It is generally postulated that Somerset was taken under direct Imperial control, from Ham Hill and Coombe Down, and both its agricultural and mineral resources exploited for the good of the public purse.
The Durotrigian region had been sub-divided, probably due to a polarization of population when the South Somerset hillforts were abandoned (circa AD 60) and the people forced to urbanize the area.
