Ildebrando Pizzetti was born in Parma, not far from Verdi's birthplace, in September 1880.
Brando Pizzetti was a keen, hard-working student, and before his graduation in 1901 had already composed and heard performed a number of large-scale works including a symphony, two other symphonic pieces, a cantata with orchestra, a violin sonata and some sacred works.
Pizzetti's Rondò Veneziano for orchestra, conceived entirely for the concert hall from the beginning - although later performed as a ballet with the composer conducting - was written in 1929, soon after Toscanini had conducted the premiere in New York of Pizzetti's Concerto dell'estate for orchestra.

Pizzetti, Ildebrando (1880 - 1968)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Among the most respected Italian composers of his generation, Pizzetti has in recent years suffered some neglect, in due, in part, to his natural conservatism in an age of experiment.
Pizzetti wrote over twenty operas, collaborating in earlier years with D'Annunzio, with whom he wrote the opera Fedra (Phaedra).
Pizzetti's choral music, much of which again draws its literary source from ancient Greece and Rome, includes a Requiem and a cantata Vanitas vanitatum (Vanity of Vanities) with a text from Ecclesiastes.

The prelude to the opera “Fedra” is pervaded with a languorous moodiness and a searing exoticism.
Though Pizzetti has scored this concerto for piano and orchestra in his own highly original musical idiom, there are notable influences of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Debussy and Rachmaninov.

Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968) was one of the more adventuresome young Italian composers of his time; his contemporaries included Italo Montemezzi, Riccardo Pick-Mangiagalli, Gian-Francesco Malipiero, and Alfredo Casella (see review of the latters' La Giara on this site).
Pizzetti's music was also performed by Nathan Milstein, Yehudi Menuhin and Tullio Serafin but in spite of this strong advocacy has generally been neglected.
In 1904 Pizzetti wrote incidental music for a production of Sophocles' Oedipus the King in Milan; two decades later the composer returned to this music and used it in his Three Symphonic Preludeswhich well convey the play's tragic atmosphere.

Throughout his life, Ildebrando Pizzetti struggled to emerge from the shadows of the older Puccini as well as his contemporary Ottorini Respighi.
In this mass, which is commonly regarded as his finest work for unaccompanied chorus, Pizzetti both directly quotes and musically alludes to ancient Roman chant, exemplifying the twentieth, and now twenty-first, fascination with the ancient world and its music, and thereby deserving a place on this evening’s program.
Throughout the movement, Pizzetti utilizes a variety of musical voices, beginning with the Gregorian ‘Dies irae’ – certainly one of the most famous and most often quoted Gregorian melodies, and ending with a thoroughly modern and tranquil setting of the ‘Pie Jesu’.

CD Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Pizzetti's late-Romanticism hardly sounds innovatory now but, given the huge presences of an operatic century from Rossini all the way to Mascagni looking over his shoulder, one can understand what he was trying to achieve.
The central piece is Pizzetti's piano concerto 'Songs of the High Season'.
It tends to episodic structure (in the manner of a film?) but nevertheless achieves a huge sense of splendour and intense emotion without ever seeming swollen, let alone bombastic, especially in the slow movement which has all the ardour of Rachmaninov at times.

At La Scala, in Milan, Arturo Toscanini conducted a new opera by Ildebrando Pizzetti.
Its story, taken from a mediaeval monk's chronicle, was that of "a young Parman of low birth, layman, idiot, and fool," one Gherardhino Segarello, whose reckless career of devotion and debauchery caused him to be put in jail, led out only to amuse guests when the Bishop of Parma gave a banquet.
Pizzetti had chosen to make a martyr of this squalid clown, to endow his dishonorable poverty with Franciscan splendor.

The influence of plainchant is there, but Martin's choral writing is more complex and filled with a sense of religious ecstasy, especially in the incandescent "Credo." The Mass is a major discovery, and the boys and men of the Westminster Cathedral Choir provide a masterful performance.
Pizzetti's Requiem owes little to the blood and thunder of Berlioz and Verdi, but more to plainchant and the dark polyphony of Victoria.
You might not know Martin and Pizzetti now, but buy this disc and you will be grateful you made their acquaintance.

Despite having found the advocacy of prestigious performers (Menuhin brother and sister for Pizzetti, Chung and Zimerman for Respighi), both works remain terra incognita for most violinists.
Respighi's B minor Sonata was composed in 1916-17, Pizzetti's A major was completed two years later; but they couldn't be more different in style and language.
If there is any similarity between the two works, it's found in the constantly singing violin part, supported by vigorous and rich piano writing.
