In 1986 Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II was conferred a Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from St. Vladimir's Theological Seminary in New York as well as from the Academy of Sciences in Crete, (1997).
In 1988, on the initiative of His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, the Mtskheta Theological Seminary was moved to Tbilisi giving birth to the foundation of the Theological Academy and Seminary there.

Archimandrite Georgi was supported by the leaders of the other main monasteries in the country and on 19 May, a group of parish priests called on Patriarch Ilia to withdraw from the WCC, stating that their communities would follow the lead of the monasteries and also sever communion with the patriarch.
