Reverend W.B.Clark's journal includes his observations of a corroboree he attended in the Illawarra district in January 1840 which was called by the Sydney Aborigines and was attended by people from Kiama, Wollongong, Liverpool, Brisbane Waters and Newcastle.
In the Illawarra district the Aborigines were observed barricading [blocking] rivers with tree branches and logs.
The Aboriginal people of the Sydney, Illawarra and Shoalhaven district [and most, if not in all parts of Australia], were often observed by early settlers to be naked.

Thirty one Illawarra Waratahs embarked on the Makarini as reinforcements for the 1 Battalion.
Another 28 Illawarra men were aboard the Makarini, but had enlisted after the Waratahs passed through the region and were members of the reinforcements for the 2,3 and 4 Battalions who were also on board the same transport.
No professional or clerical workers were amongst the Illawarra Waratahs, and Table 3 shows that their age was even more concentrated in the 20-24 year group than the Kangaroos, the AIF or the Illawarra.

Until its merger with St George to form the St George-Illawarra Dragons, the Illawarra Steelers had represented the South Coast region in the NSWRL, ARL.
At the end of 1998 the club merged with the St George Dragons and became part of a fairy-tale that saw the St George-Illawarra Dragons carry the Illawarra name into a Grand Final, which was lost 18-20 to the Melbourne Storm after a last minute penalty try was given.
Illawarra still play as a separate team from St George at a Junior representative level but have amalgamated at the First Division and Jersey Flegg levels.

Illawarra Health's board is supporting a merger with Sydney's South Eastern Area Health service.

The merger under the name and jumper of the St George Illawarra Dragons has since been a very touchy subject and the subsequent victory by South Sydney has made this merger even harder to swallow for diehard Steelers fans.
