The Illawarra and Eastern Suburbs Line is located in Sydney, Australia, in CityRail's metropolitan and south coast network, and has two branches, one to Cronulla and the other to Waterfall.
The Illawarra line is joined to the South Coast line at Waterfall which extends the CityRail network outside the metropolitan area to Dapto in the south, then continuing to Kiama, then the Shoalhaven region.
The line was made in the mid 1800s to transport people living in Wollongong ("the Gong") to the city of Sydney.

Construction commenced in 1948 but the underground railway line was not finished until 1979.

During the construction of the second section of the Illawarra railway line a camp was established at the 26 mile peg where the village of Cawley was laid out.
Illawarra was the native name for the area which early explorers and settlers referred to as the "Five Islands District".
The Australian Museum affirms that Illawarra means "high place near the sea" and was derived from the language of the Wodi Wodi Tribe which inhabited the area between Wollongong and the Shoalhaven River.

It was suggested as a loop line between St. Peters and Liverpool, to relieve congestion on the main western and southern railway.
The railway station was initially to be called "St. George", but after objections from communities on the Illawarra Line, it was changed to "Belmore", as it was the closest station to the settled district around Belmore Road (now Punchbowl).
The line was extended to Bankstown in 1909.

The name of the road is shown on many official documents as the Illawarra Road until the end of the nineteenth century, however it was usually known as the Gannons Forest Road until the 1880's when it was commonly called Forest Road.

There are some other oddities of the naming of the tables: the western line is referred to as the Emu Plains line and the current south lines as the Macarthur lines, curious as these two stations are the minor end stations with a relatively lower service level than say Campbelltown or Penrith.
However the Blue Mountains line is not the Lithgow line, but the Southern Highlands line is the Goulburn Line.
Of note: the North Shore line table is pink despite being red/ yellow on maps, station signs etc, and is of large size.
