Illiniza - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Illiniza, a dormant stratovolcano, consists of two snow covered peaks: Illiniza Sur (5248 m) and Illiniza Norte (5126 m).
Whilst Illiniza Sur is a more difficult climb due to the peak being glacial, Illiniza Norte requires little or no climbing expertise, and may be done as a trekking peak.
The Illiniza's are generally thought to be the best acclimbatisation mountains in Ecuador, and are frequently used as a prepatory climb to higher peaks such as Cotopaxi and Cayambe.

American Alpine Institute Program - Ecuador - Antisana and Illiniza Expedition
Illiniza Sur presents one of the most sharply defined summits in the Northern Andes, and with its easy access in the western cordillera and attractive snow and ice routes, it provides a rare opportunity for a short, high altitude climbing expedition on moderately challenging terrain.
On Illiniza Sur we climb the mountain's Northwest Face, a beautiful and interesting route which includes short sections of steep snow and ice on complex glacial terrain, a traverse of a moderate face, an ascent of a couloir, and a climb of an aesthetic ridgeline that leads us to the summit.
The Illiniza and Antisana Expedition described above is for climbers with skills beyond the basic level of snow and ice climbing.

Ecuador - Tour Operator - Jungle trips - KEM PERY
We recommend to start with the technically not very difficult Illiniza North (5126 m) and the famous Cotopaxi volcano (5897 m), for the more advanced then the highest mountain Ecuador’s, the Chimborazo (6310 m), as well Cayambe (5790 m) and the Antisana.
To be able to reach all the peaks it is necessary to have a good acclimatization of at least five days in the altitude and we recommend to carry out one of our trekking tours.
While the South peak only is recommended for the very advanced climber, the Illiniza North presents itself as an acclimatization climb for the following higher mountains.
