The Illinois Central Railroad was chartered in 1851 to build a railroad from Cairo, Illinois, at the joining of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, to Galena, in the extreme northwestern corner of the state (the "Old Main"), with a branch from Centralia (named for the railroad) to Chicago (the "Chicago Branch").
The NOJandGN and Mississippi Central were then reorganized in 1877 as the New Orleans, Jackson and Northern and the Central Mississippi, respectively, and then consolidated as the Chicago, St. Louis and New Orleans Railroad, a subsidiary of the IC.
In 1972 the Illinois Central merged with the parallel Gulf Mobile and Ohio to form Illinois Central Gulf.

The Illinois Central (AAR reporting mark IC), sometimes called the Main Line of Mid-America, was a railroad carrier in the central United States, with its primary routes from Chicago to New Orleans and Sioux Falls.
The Illinois Central was officially chartered by the General Assembly in 1851.
On August 10, 1972 the Illinois Central Railroad merged with the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad to form the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad.

The following year the state issued a charter to the Illinois Central which outlined the route from the southern end of the Illinois and Michigan Canal (LaSalle) to Cairo with branches to Chicago and, through Galena, to the banks of the Mississippi River.
In later years, the Illinois Central encouraged the development of a variety of crops such as sorghum, sugar beets, cotton, fruits, vegetables and soybeans; the improvement of livestock; the use of farm machinery; and the development of industry and coal mining.
For sixteen years the Illinois Central was exclusively an Illinois railroad; then it began to expand into other states.

 Jazz Age Chicago -- Illinois Central Station
Central Station was opened for business in 1893, partly in an effort to improve service capacity and overall customer satisfaction during that year's World's Columbian Exposition, when hundreds of thousands of fair-goers voyaged to Chicago by train.
Despite the alterations in the landscape, Central Station's all-brick, Romanesque facade and tall clock tower remained a dramatic landmark at the southern end of the park.
In the end, Central Station continued to serve passengers through the 1960s, and was finally disused only after the consolidation of intercity service at Union Station by Amtrak in 1972.

As of 1900, the Illinois Central Railroad extended 912 miles from Chicago via Cairo, Illinois, to New Orleans, Louisiana, but if one added in the other main, branch, and leased lines, as of 1902 the company operated 4,265-1/2 miles of track.
A comparatively old railroad, chartered February 10, 1851, the Illinois Central had built first to Dubuque, Iowa, which it reached on June 11, 1855, then to Cairo, which it reached on September 27, 1856.
The engine must have seen hard service, for reportedly the Illinois Central rebuilt it in 1918, modernizing it with a superheater, and possibly replacing the boiler and firebox.
