U.S. Illinois Route 40 is a north-south route in central portion of the U.S. state of Illinois.
Illinois 40 is known as Knoxville Avenue in the Peoria area, generally south of Illinois Route 6.
Route 40 crosses over Interstate 74 north of downtown, and then grows complex in the downtown area, as there are three turns in a one-block length.

 Abandoned Wells
The Illinois Water Well Construction Code requires the owner of a water well, boring or monitoring well to properly seal the well within 30 days after it is abandoned and no longer used to supply water.
If a well or boring is in such a state of disrepair that it has the potential for transmitting contaminants into the groundwater or otherwise threatens the public health or safety, it also must be sealed.
The Illinois Groundwater Protection Act mandates that where an abandoned well is found to contaminate another potable water well, the owner of the abandoned well is responsible for providing a safe and sufficient supply of water to the owner of the well that has been contaminated.

Illinois, despite (or because of) having been steamrollered by the glaciers, actually has some nice topography, which you can experience in several state parks.
For some reason the northwestern corner of Illinois and the southwestern corner of Wisconsin (known as the "driftless region") escaped the ravages of the glaciers.
For a while it was a stagecoach stop on the route from Chicago to Galena, but it began to die in the late 1800's when the railroad passed it by.
