The Woman's Educational Association of Illinois Wesleyan University was formed on June 3, 1874, by "several ladies" who met at the University.
University always to be filled by a woman", and "to establish a Christian Home in Bloomington for lady students of the University where board shall be furnished at the lowest available rates." The Constitution stipulated that "any person" could become a member of the Association for a fee of ten dollars.
The trustees of the University voted 20 to 1 to admit women in 1870.

An Environmental Studies Program was established at IWU in 1999, when a minor in Environmental Studies became available, and students have been able to create a special major in the subject with assistance from faculty advisers in selecting coursework.
Following approval by the University's Curriculum Council and faculty as a whole, the major is now available as an established plan of study.
