Aircraft carrier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Modern aircraft carriers have a flat-top deck, the flight deck that serves as a take-off and landing area for aircraft.
Several airships and balloons were destroyed, but as the carrier had no method of recovering the aircraft safely, two of the pilots ditched their aircraft in the sea alongside the carrier while the others headed for neutral Denmark.
As now only nuclear powered carriers have boilers as part of their motive power system, the majority of aircraft carriers are now equipped with steam generating plant solely to power the catapults.

 AIRCRAFT CARRIER FACTS AND INFORMATION
An aircraft carrier is a warship whose main role is to deploy and recover aircraft—in effect acting as a sea-going airbase.
The first purpose-designed aircraft carrier to be developed was the HMS ''Hermes'', although the first one to be commissionned was the Japanese ''Hosho'' (commissioned in December 1922, followed by HMS ''Hermes'' in July 1923).
However, the vulnerability of carriers to traditional battleships was quickly illustrated by the sinking of HMS ''Glorious'' by German battlecruisers during the Norwegian campaign in 1940.

 Future Aircraft Carriers (CVF)
aircraft carriers were originally conceived during the Cold War as anti-submarine cruisers designed to carry a small air group, mainly consisting of anti-submarine helicopters.
For example, a problem with the Invincible Class was that the aircraft lifts were positioned in the middle of the flight deck and as a result they could not be used when aircraft were leaving or returning to the ship.
It is clear that two carriers are needed to meet commitments as for instance in 1998 Invincible had to be redeployed from the Persian Gulf to Kosovo, placing a huge strain on the ship and her complement.

Since the end of the Cold War, the primary role of the 20,600t aircraft carriers has changed from sea control to maritime force projection, to include maritime strike, littoral manoeuvres and command and control of land operations.
All three carriers are also equipped with two GAM-B01 20mm guns from Oerlikon-Contraves and BAE SYSTEMS, which have a maximum range of 2km and firing rate of 1,000 rounds/min.

Since the end of the Cold War, the role of the Invincible Class aircraft carriers (CVS) has evolved from one of sea control to maritime force projection.
The primary mission for the CVS is to deploy JFH and Fleet aircraft in pursuit of national objectives.
Integrated with other task group units, aircraft, such as the Merlin HM Mk1 and Sea King ASaC Mk7, will be used to achieve the sea control (or freedom of action to use the sea for our own purpose) necessary to assure littoral access.

 Invincible Class Aircraft Carrier
As the Government of the day was not prepared to finance such a class of vessel as an aircraft carrier, the Navy came up with a number of euphemisms to hide the true nature of these vessels, such as calling them Through Deck Command Cruisers, and side elevation sketches showing a conventional profile.
While the first of class was under construction changes were announced, which included the ordering of twenty-four Sea Harriers, to carry out the interceptor role, and would be equipped with the Ferranti Blue Fox monopulse radar, an integrated nav/attack system, provision for air-to-air missiles and a heads-up display.
While Hermes sailed for the UK at the end of the conflict, Illustrious remained and was finally relieved by her new sister ship, Invincible.

Concurrent with plans for the Future Aircraft Carrier and critical to its success is the "Joint Combat Aircraft" (JCA) programme, formally known as the "Future Carrier Borne Aircraft" (FCBA) programme.
When plans for the new carriers were formally announced in 1998 their displacement was estimated at 30,000 to 40,000 tonne and it was stated that the maximum CVF length being considered was 300 metres (984 feet).

 ILLUSTRIOUS CLASS
Though late coming, she had hardly been launched when a new 'Illustrious' class of four aircraft-carriers was laid down in 1937 to respond to the already increasing likelihood of war.
Operational experience was, therefore, not a part of the later concept, which took the scale of the Ark Royals belt and horizontal protection, and added a 114mm (4.5-in) hangar well.
Thus the whole of the vulnerable aircraft accommodation became an armoured box, but so much weight high in the ship limited the protection to only one hangar and, though HMS Illustrious, HMS Victorious and HMS Formidable (all launched in 1939) were not significantly smaller than the Ark Royal, they carried far fewer aircraft.
