Illywhacker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Illywhacker is a novel by Australian writer Peter Carey.
It was published in 1985, short-listed for the 1985 Booker Prize, and won the Victorian Premier's Literary Award and The Age Book of the Year Award.
The novel tells the story of Herbert Badgery, self-admitted liar, trickster, and confidence man, the "Illywhacker" of the title (though "illywhacker" is also supposed to be Australian slang (strine) for "a stick for smacking a child with, (not allowed any more)").

Unlike these other two novels, however, Illywhacker is neither specifically political or directly allegorical; its depiction of Australian national identity is often murky, being tied up in a number of ambiguous and self-contradictory leitmotifs woven into the meandering first-person narrative of a self-confessed liar.
Badgery is the “illywhacker” of the title, a slang term explained in one of the novel’s two epigrams as “a professional trickster” or “spieler”, derived – as Leah Goldstein explains midway through the book – from pig Latin: “Spieler is ieler-spee and then iely-whacker” (7, 245).
Illywhacker thus draws on the Australian storytelling tradition of the yarn, a tall tale the “height” of which is an essential element of the audience’s enjoyment.

In Illywhacker one metafictional device is authorial intervention - usually to label lies or liars, or to foreshadow future events or recall previous ones in the novel.
The size of the country is suggested by the wanderings of Herbert and Leah (and later of Herbert's son, Charles), and ultimately the contrast between Herbert and Leah centres on her revelling in the freedom provided by openness while he seeks the comfort of confinement.
In Illywhacker, Leah and Herbert separate when her estranged husband suffers a crippling accident and she returns to nurse him, and, in the interim, Herbert is sent to gaol for several years; but when they are finally reunited in Charles' pet emporium, nothing happens.

 Dirty Very Old Man
By the time he has told his tale and brought us to the present, Francophilia has given way to whatever the word is for being dependent on the Japanese, and the dreamy reminiscence of Paris nights, 13,000 miles away, has become Robert Hawke-speak, the language of supersalesmanship and the current Australian Prime Minister.
There is a strong whiff of this, a laboriousness of invention sometimes, an overfertility of metaphor, one dragon and one traveling Australian illusionist too many.
Yet reading ''Illywhacker'' is not unlike spending a week in the company of the best kind of Australian.

The paradoxical nature of Carey's novels, the merging of lies with truth, fantasy with reality, is strongly reflected in his novel Illywhacker (1985) which sold 60,000 copies, 20 times the normal print run of an Australian novel.
The story of 139-year-old illywhacker Herbert Badgery is the story of Australia itself.
His writing is outstanding in its breadth of scope and its cultural significance as well as its offer of a new vision, a magical reality, a vision through which the author becomes the ultimate illywhacker.

Carey is a long-winded storyteller, but a very funny one, and the interweaving plot of Badgery, his mythical airplane factory, and the people who surround him is engaging and humorous.

I recently reread Illywhacker, and found it every bit as gripping, entertaining, and hilarious as on my first trip through the novel, over ten years ago.
