Ilmenite - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Ilmenite has a fl streak; it is opaque, but in very thin scales sometimes transparent with a clovebrown colour.
The name ilmenite, proposed by A. Kupffer in 1827, is after the Ilmen Mountains in the southern Urals, whence come the best crystals of the mineral.
Ilmenite occurs, often in association with magnetite, in gneisses and schists, sometimes forming beds of considerable extent, but of little or no economic value.

 Mineral Ilmenite,Iron Titanium Oxide,Ilmenite Properties,Ilmenite Uses
Ilmenite forms as a primary mineral in mafic igneous rocks and is concentrated into layers by a process called"magmatic segregation".
Ilmenite also occurs in pegmatites and some metamorphic rocks as well as in the sedimentary rocks that are formed from the weathering and erosion of them.
It is often associated with magnetite and therefore ilmenite is a minor ore of iron as the magnetite and ilmenite are processed for their iron contents.

 Rutile and ilmenite in Australia
Ilmenite is found in the Murray Basin and the Wimmera (covers 600 000 sq km in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia ranging from Broken Hill to Horsham from Renmark to Bendigo.
Auspac (EARS process), the ilmenite is roasted to convert the titanium component into the insoluble rutile form and the iron component is conditioned for leaching.
At present, the lower grades of ilmenite (52 to 57 per cent titanium dioxide) are exported without conversion to the rutile by West Australian titanium mineral producers to the sulfate-based and electric arc slagging plants.

The groundmass is holocrystalline and microcrystalline and is composed of microcline, quartz, biotite, magnetite, ilmenite, fluorite, apatite, and zircon.
Ilmenite inclusions survived HF digestion of the quartz grains and were present in the HF residue that was examined by SEM.
Therefore it is concluded that the bulk of the inclusions in the blue quartz consists of the type 1 ilmenite inclusions, although it is difficult to estimate the mass ratio of type 1 to type 2 inclusions with precision.

Their skepticism is based on the density and ease of flow of the ilmenite-pyroxene layer and on the rates of dissolution of ilmenite and pyroxene.
In particular, ilmenite and pyroxene must melt and become part of the magma in the ratio of 3:1.
However, ilmenite would have been much less abundant than pyroxene in the high-titanium layer: they would have occurred in the proportions of 1:5 or 1:6.

The principal industrial application of ilmenite is in the manufacture of titanium dioxide or synthetic rutile, which in turn is used to manufacture white paints.
On this basis the reserves of ilmenite and rutile are being estimated at present.
After examining the present practice of estimation of reserves, the Group is of the opinion that it in not possible to estimate and classify the reserved of finite mad rutile according to their and use grades, and the present practice of estimating the total reserves of these minerals may be continued.

ILMENITE Chapter 22. Oxides and hydroxides
Ilmenite, an iron titanium oxide mineral, was reported from Sterling Hill by Palache (1935) and from Franklin by Frondel (1972).
Ilmenite occurs as euhedral, lustrous, opaque, fl, hexagonal, 1-2 mm crystals, tabular on {001}, and with metallic luster.
Palache (1935) reported ilmenite from the hemimorphite deposits at Sterling Hill, but mentioned the presence of Ti and Mn “as well as of iron.”; It is thus not certain if this material, not seen by this writer, is ilmenite or pyrophanite, which was later discovered there.

 Titanium dioxide pigment & metal
In Australia nearly all titanium dioxide is produced from ilmenite as it naturally occurs in accessible high concentrations and in a form which allows the ready extraction of the rutile.
The lower grades of ilmenite (52 to 57 per cent titanium dioxide) are exported by West Australian titanium mineral producers to oveseas sulfate-based plants and electric arc furnaces.
The balance of ilmenite not converted to rutile is often of a lower grade (52 to 57 per cent titanium dioxide) which is exported largely to sulfate-based plants.
