Ilona appeared headed for a third consecutive gold medal, but after winning her first five matches in the final pool, she seemed to run out of energy, losing to Maxine Mitchell and then two consecutive 4-3 matches to Irene Camber of Italy; the second of which was for the gold medal.
Elek is considered one of the greatest female fencers in the sport's history.
Besides her Olympic triumphs, she was very successful at the World Championships, capturing the gold medal in the women's foil in 1934, 1935, and 1951 (at the age of 44).

Ilona Elek was already 29 years old when she competed in fencing (foil) in her first Olympics, the 1936 Berlin Games.
In the final pool, she faced and defeated the winners of the last two Olympic championships, bettering Helene Mayer of Germany 5-4 and Ellen Preis of Austria 5-3 to gain the gold medal.
The next two Olympics were cancelled because of war, but when the Games resumed in London in 1948, Elek became one of only two champions from 1936 to successfully defend her title.

After the Olympics, Mayer returned to the United States, and in 1937, she won the world championship in Paris, defeating Schacherer-Elek.
In the 1948 Olympics in London, Elek and Preis again won the gold and bronze medals respectively.
