Named "Ilya Muromets" the new machine featured the same layout as its predecessor, but featured the entirely new fuselage and an additional pair of wings installed aft of the main wings (these additional wings were later removed).
After successful test flights of the new airplane the Military Department placed an order for 10 air ships (in all documents Muromets bombers were referred to as an "air ships" unlikely to smaller airplanes) of Ilya Muromets type B - the improved version of the prototype (referred to as the "type A").
Muromets was the world's first aircraft featuring full spherical fire envelope (late versions had up to 8 machine guns).

The first use of an airplane in war was on Oct. 23, 1911, during the Italo-Turkish War, when an Italian pilot made a one-hour reconnaissance flight over enemy positions near Tripoli, Libya, in a Blériot XI monoplane.
Though the French machine gun had a tendency to "hang fire," so that steel deflector plates had to be fitted onto the rear of the propeller blades to prevent their being shot off, Saulnier quickly perfected his device and fitted it to Garros's Morane L monoplane.

On September 12, 1916, the Russians lost their first Ilya Muromets in a fight with four German Albatroses, three of which it managed to shoot down.
The most common model of the Ilya Muromets was the S-23 V, with 32 built 1914-1916.

This was the first multi-engine airplane in the world, and Sikorsky was it's first pilot on 13 May 1913.
The bigger S-22 "Ilya Muromets" (Spelling depends on the source) followed, beginning passenger service in an enclosed cabin in December 1913 (something not attempted elsewhere until the late 20's).
The "Ilya" was a direct result of the successful "Le Grand" which after 54 flights was destroyed on the ground when the engine from an aircraft flying overhead came loose and smashed into it!

The maiden test flight of the world's first four-engine airplane, the Russian Knight, designed by Igor Sikorsky, took place on May 13, 1913, in St. Petersburg.
Though the first conventional airplane had not yet taken off, by age 12 Igor had already built a working model of a machine that lifted off vertically using a propeller powered by a rubber band.
In June of 1914, Sikorsky piloted the Ilya Muromets, carrying 10 passengers, half of them members of the Russian parliament.

In October of 1914 a Muromets dropped 320 pounds of bombs from an altitude of 4,000 feet at the Petrograd testing grounds.
In February of 1915, as depicted in Stan Stokes painting entitled Russian Giant, a Ilya Muromets V Kievsky II model dropped 600 pounds of bombs on the railway station at Mlava, significantly damaging the facility.
