The older Salkind wasn’t as sold on the idea, if only because he wasn’t as familiar with the popular DC comics character as his son was, having grown up in Europe, where the character wasn’t as much a staple.
Salkind pushed forward, despite the troubles with his father, and rediscovered his love for the Man of Steel.
Salkind is about to be shoved back into the spotlight — not only because “Superman” is back in a big way, thanks to Bryan Singer’s new film, “Superman Returns”, which he says he’s “very excited about” - with the anticipated DVD releases of “Superboy” and the original “Superman” movies, being re-issued in a comprehensive box-set.

Ilya loves to chat; he's very old school, I sensed a childlike quality, he's still crazy about the myth and the legends, the bedtime stories you read to your children, the scary stories around the fire, it's all that classical, archetypal literature he wants to see on the screen.
Ilya never came across as an egomaniac, what surprised me was just how cool he was.

Salkind responded to Donner's insistence in interviews over the years that no one ever contacted him to let him know he wouldn't be returning to finish "Superman II".
Salkind claims as false the rumor that the love interest in "Superman III" was childhood sweetheart Lana Lang because the producers were retaliating against actress Margot Kidder, who had leading lady status as Lois Lane in the first two films.

That changed in 1978, when producer Ilya Salkind introduced audiences to a new Superman — played by a then-unknown actor named Christopher Reeve.
Unlike the TV show and movie serials that preceded it, Salkind's film series featured name actors (including Gene Hackman and Richard Pryor) and big budgets — a formula that yielded great success.
Reeve hung up his cape in 1987 after the poorly received "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace," but Salkind forged on, producing a syndicated TV spinoff called "The Adventures of Superboy." Although the series managed to survive for three seasons, it never garnered much attention outside of its comic book-loving fan base.

A debate could rage for eons as to the superiority of either directors “Super” work but the Salkinds saw fit to request Lester’s return for a further sequel in 1983.
The poor box office performance of this third outing though, clearly showed public interest was already waning in The Man Of Steel’s cinematic adventures and the Salkinds decided to embark on the next chapter of Kryptonian capers while they still held the rights to the Superman mythos.
