The My Hero Project - Sergei Vladimir Ilyushin, Jr.
At first, young Ilyushin snubbed the idea of flying in space; since the flight would be completely controlled from the ground, he saw no challenge in it and considered it fit for "dogs and lab rats." But he changed his mind and soon was placed in a special space training course.
During reentry, when he was supposed to eject from the capsule and parachute to safety, Ilyushin was unable to eject (he had lost consciousness at some point during the flight) and made a "hard landing" in the capsule.
In 1999, Ilyushin was living in a modest apartment in Moscow with his wife of over 45 years, still active as a test pilot, aircraft designer and spokesperson for a major military aircraft manufacturer.

The Ilyushin Il-86 (NATO reporting name: Camber) is a Russian wide-body commercial passenger jet aircraft.
The aircraft was developed by the Soviet Union; announced in 1971, it first flew on December 22, 1976, and entered commercial sevice in 1980.
It has good capacity, cargo space and robustness, but since the Soviets at the time lacked any high-bypass turbofan engine, the aircraft had to use four Kuznetsov NK-86 low-bypass turbofans similar to the NK-8 engines Ilyushin Il-62 (though of somewhat higher power), which have a high fuel consumption.

The five ILyushin 76TD that have been retrofitted as Waterbombers, are owned solely by EMERCOM, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, one of the top five ministries of the Russian government.
It has to be remembered that the ILyushin 76 cargo plane flies the world on a daily basis, as do other aircraft that do not have specific US FAA certification.
It should be stressed that should the EMERCOM ILyushin 76 Waterbombers be deployed in US during the year 2000 fire season, it would be under such bases.
