  FlightSim.Com Review: Aeroflot Ilyushin IL-86
This fine Aeroflot Ilyushin IL-86 is made by Dmitry Olenin and Dmitry Colesnik.
I had to be careful of a Tupolev TU-154M from St. Petersburg landing ahead of me, and wake turbulence of an Ilyushin IL-62 departing on 7R for Budapest.
This plane is very easy to fly manually on approaches, so I brought her in for a nice soft landing deployed the spoilers and reverse thrust.

 Ilyushin Il-86 - Definition, explanation
The Ilyushin Il-86 is a Russian wide-body commercial passenger jet aircraft.
The aircraft was developed by the Soviet Union; announced in 1971, it first flew on December 22, 1976, and entered commercial sevice in 1980.
It has good capacity, cargo space and robustness, but since the Soviets at the time lacked any high-bypass turbofan engine, the aircraft had to use four low-bypass turbofans similar to those of the Ilyushin Il-62 (though of somewhat higher power), which have a high fuel consumption.

Long-range bombers like the Tupolev Tu-20 and commercial transports like the Ilyushin Il-76 were able to hold the large central TsNV navigation computer complex (multiple boxes with different sub-functions), although the TsNV was too large for smaller aircraft.
Three years later, the Ilyushin Il-76 airliner was introduced with a Cat II flight control computer feeding a HUD display.
Nevertheless, the Ilyushin Design Bureau learned much from the Il-86 program and in 1988 developed the Il-96, with the 80-400-type computer integrating triple INS, Omega and GLONASS displays in the navigation HUD for Cat IIIA performance.

Some of the Il-86's problems were rectified in its successor, the Ilyushin Il-96.
However, the reduced demand for Soviet aircraft after the end of the Cold War made the Il-96 too little, too late, and the Il-86 remains the only large Russian airliner to see any widespread use.

The Il-86 was designed to an Aeroflot requirement and was the first Soviet wide-body transport, and the first to feature under wing engine pods.
The decision to mount the engines in pods was the result of a clandestine meeting between Boeing executives and Ilyushin designers who exchanged proprietary data on wing mounted engine pods in exchange for information on advanced metals; an area where the Ilyushin bureau were leaders.
After that meeting, artist’s impressions of the Il-86 with rear mounted engines ceased to appear and were replaced with the configuration we know today.
