The town of Imadate to the southeast of Fukui City boasts a history of 1,500 years as the place that has been producing the top-notch washi paper.
Imadate is called 'home' to Japanese paper money as it is the town where paper for bills for cabinets of the Meiji era (1868-1912) was produced.
It is a manufacturer of accessories for furnishings that has come on the world scene and made logo marks and accessories for the uniforms of the Japanese national team to the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

"Washi Paper Cultural Festival" to be held in Imadate-cho, Fukui Prefecture, will feature an exhibition of prototypes of Japan's traditional washi paper such as Echizen (Fukui Prefecture), Tosa (Kochi Prefecture), Mino (Gifu Prefecture), Inshu (Tottori Prefecture) and other localities.
The 20th National Cultural Festival - Fukui 2005 will be held from Oct. 22 to Nov. 3, and will feature exhibitions and introductions covering from traditional industries to the latest technologies of the prefecture, music festivals, art exhibitions and symposiums on culture.
Professor Isao Yano of Fukui Prefectural University has identified the hormone that promotes the maturing of the ovary of immature kuruma prawn (Marsupenaeus japonicus), clarifying the full mechanism of maturing of prawns for the first time in the world.

The short-title, Bioethics in Asia, is symbolic in the sense that this was the largest bioethics meeting to be held in Asia, although many of the papers are global in perspective.
The meetings follow the tradition of the five previous International Bioethics Seminars in Fukui held since 1987 which have discussed the ethical, legal and social impact (ELSI) issues of human genetics, and have worked at promoting human dignity with sciences and technology.
Almost all participants then moved immediately to Fukui, appreciating the beautiful autumn maple scenes on the Hokuriku Highways and the traditional culture of handmade paper in Imadate, and Zen experiences in Eiheiji Temple, and they stayed in Fukui for one night.

The exhibition runs from 9/23 ~ 10/3 at Imadate Art Museum (Fukui).

Actually, I shouldn't pull your leg like that.
The return address on the box is not Echizen, but instead is the modern name of that area, Fukui Prefecture, and the contents of the package are of course sheets of handmade washi.
Imadate-gun in Fukui has an abundance of the clear running water that is necessary for this work, and for hundreds of years now, the papermakers of this area have specialized in making paper for woodblock printmakers.
