  Pixels, images, and files
Considerable confusion arises because image size is specified by the number of pixels, the "resolution" in dots or pixels per inch (dpi or ppi), and the physical size (width and height).
A more accurate table, based the true image sharpness produced by the lens/camera combination, is presented in the introduction to Sharpness in Imatest.com.
When an image is sent to the printer, the image editor or printer driver resizes it to the printer's native resolution-- 720 dpi for Epson Photo printers; 600 dpi for HP and Canon.

Image file formats - TIF, JPG, PNG, GIF
Briefly, the three most common image file formats, the most important for general purposes today, are TIF, JPG and GIF.
The JPG file format is the smallest by far, and a JPG copy should be used for such purposes (when file size is all important).
For Line art and graphic files (as opposed to photographic images), then GIF files have historically been best, both for smallest size and for best quality.

 Raster Image Files
A raster image file is generally defined to be a rectangular array of regularly sampled values, known as pixels.
The GIF file has only 8 bit color and is therefore basically of lesser quality than the other images (of course it is also smaller and on an 8 bit color monitor would be just as good as a 24 bit color image).
The PostScript (.ps) file is unusual because it is not a raster image at all but rather a vector image (see the discussion on PostScript files).

ISO image - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An ISO image (.iso) is an informal term for a disk image of an ISO 9660 file system.
As is typical for disk images, in addition to the data files that are contained in the ISO image, it also contains all the filesystem metadata (boot code, structures, and attributes).
A copy of CD contents, stored as an.iso file, is made this way: the ripper searches for the sectors of the CD that have been used, say 251,000 for instance (there are 330,000 sectors on a 74 min CD and 360,000 sectors on an 80 min CD).

 Understanding Image Files and Compression
Bitmap images are defined by their dimension in pixels as well as by the number of colors they represent.
Bitmap images also have large file sizes that are determined by the image’s dimensions in pixels and its color depth.
Since only base-level images are required for this format, each Portfolio II disc can contain about 700 images, one hour of digital audio or a proportional combination (such as 350 images and 30 minutes of sound).

 8. Image Compression & File Formats
When you take a photograph, the size of the image file is huge compared to many other types of computer files since each pixel requires 24 bits (3 bytes) to store color information.
A file for a low-resolution 1 megapixel image is 3 megabytes, and at 3 megapixels is climbs to 9 megabytes, and at 6 megapixels all the way to 18 megabytes.
Their files are approximately 60% smaller than uncompressed TIFF files with the same number of pixels and the time you have to wait between shots is shorter since processing time in the camera is shorter.

 Image Files
If you use the wrong file, you may find the photo is difficult to open in certain programs or it can't be opened by another computer (including by your lab).
They tell you the resolution of scanners, printers and photo files (this is entirely different than the optical resolution of a photo based on the film and lens).
If you compare two digital images of equal size but at different dpi, the one with more dots in an inch will allow more detail to be displayed (it will have a higher resolution).

The raw file format for stacks consists of one file per stack - all of the images are kept in one file.

Welcome to IRINFO - Understanding Proprietary Infrared Image Files
The explanation for this is as follows: Radiometric IR images contain both a spatial representation of the scene and data that are used to measure (as temperature) the radiant energy seen by the camera.
These proprietary image files continue to be viewed as a competitive advantage by each of the IR camera manufacturers, and continue to serve to “lock in” customers to only one manufacturer.
For example, if you were using a spot and an area measurement tool at the time that the image was stored, then the XY coordinates of those tools were stored in the image file, as well as any of their reference temperature values.

This function takes the name of a file or a file handle as argument and will return one or more hashes (actually hash references) describing the images inside the file.
All lower case keys are mandatory for all file formats and will always be there unless an error occured (in which case the "error" key will be present.) Mixed case keys will only be present when the corresponding information element is available in the image.

The resized images are saved with a new name in the same folder, or can be placed in a new folder, named after the selected image size.
The program can process selected files or entire folders (with subfolders) and process images and HTML files at the same time, allowing webmasters to optimize their entire site in a single run.

RAW image format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Raw files are so named because they are not yet processed and ready to use with a bitmap graphics editor, printed, or displayed by a typical web browser.
Nearly all digital cameras can process the image from the sensor into a JPEG file using settings for white balance, color saturation, contrast, and sharpness that are either selected automatically or entered by the photographer before taking the picture.
Although the term "raw" describes files in the classical sense of "raw data" vs. "cooked data", raw files typically are slightly processed in the camera.

 Image File Guide
If an image is saved in a lossy image format, it means the format being used discards some of the "unimportant" image information.
It won't result in as small a file as a jpeg (which is why it's not used on the web), but you do retain all image quality.
When compressed, the file is usually about half the size of the original file.

Working with Raw Image Files   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Raw images are many times larger than even the highest-quality JPEG images because none of the information in the file has been removed (or compressed).
A RAW file is a fundamentally a record of the raw sensor data from the camera along with additional metadata supplied by the camera (name of the photographer, date, shutter speed, aperture, white balance, etc.) You don't edit this file.
The Photoshop file gives you the most room to work, and when you have done all you want or can do, that file can be saved in any other format you choose (allowing for compatibility issues).

Storing Ghost image files directly to NTFS partitions
The image file is written to or from the mapped drive by means of the network client, rather than DOS.
That is, Ghost can copy a disk or partition image from a disk or partition on one computer directly to a disk or partition on another computer by writing over the destination disk or partition, even when the disk or partition at the source or destination is NTFS.
Because the image file is transferred through the Ghost Multicast Server or the Ghost Enterprise Console, Ghost's ability to save image files directly to NTFS partitions depends on the operating system that the Multicast Server or the Ghost Console are running in.

We are working on a project that requires to transfer large image files from a server to clients.
When transferring large image files (or any other large binary data), unless you are doing it over a very fast connection (for example lets say 10MB/s for images around 1 meg), your main performance concern is going to be in bandwidth.
It may be faster to compress the image, transmit it, and decompress it on the other side, despite the extra processing time this entails.
