  The Stone Drawing
Sometimes an image will be totally developed at this stage (in which case, the stone drawing reproduces the preliminary idea as exactly as possible).
Determining Image Size: In the UA printshop, students are required to use a minimum of 1" margins between the edges of the stone and the edges of the image.
Dilineating the Image Area: To assure that the drawn image is positioned properly on the stone, the image edges are drawn lightly with red conte or hard graphite.

 Stone Lithography - Ken Pattern
In lithography the separation of the image and non-image areas is achieved primarily through the principle that oil repels water, together with a chemical reaction resulting when a solution called an etch is applied to the stone.
Since the image and non-image areas are on the same plane or surface, unlike in other print-making media, the image is separated on the stone in a chemical process using an etch.
Once the stone is moved onto the “press bed” of the printing press, the fl ink image is removed with solvent and an ink stain of the color to be printed is applied.

 Stone Age Institute
Stone Age Institute researchers are collecting such essential data at a number of early Stone Age localities (Gona, Ethiopia; Ain Hanech, Algeria; Transvaal, South Africa; Nihewan Basin, China) documenting the emergence, development, and spread of tool-making hominids in key areas of the world where this evidence is preserved.
Stone Age Institute researcher Kevin Hunt has engaged in a variety of studies investigating such areas as chimpanzee posture, feeding behaviors, and tool-use, in order to develop models for the early evolution of bipedal, tool-wielding hominids.
Stone Age Institute graduate researcher, Leslie Harlacker, is currently conducting a comprehensive study comparing the biomechanical patterns of tool-making among human novices to those observed in experienced stone knappers, and also comparing the patterns of humans to tool-making apes, as part of her Ph.D. dissertation research.

 Jonathan Ochshorn - Stone
Stone has two distinct architectural faces: in monumental architecture, it stands for wealth, power, and permanence; on the other hand, especially when used at a domestic scale and based on local craft traditions, it appears as modest, forthright, and natural.
Stone's symbolic content is not determined by these two traditions alone, but also reflects the revolutionary changes brought about by industrialization, and the attitudes - ranging from ambivalence to outright hostility - with which those changes are greeted.
The history of stone in 20th-century architecture can be pieced together from readings in general architectural histories and in the accounts of individual architects, but sections or chapters dealing specifically with stone are unusual.

UF RESEARCH: DESPITE MALE IMAGE, STONE TOOLMAKING ALSO DONE BY WOMEN   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Stone tools are important because they were the first recognizable object people made, marking the beginning of the archaeological record dating back as early as 2.6 million years ago, Weedman said.
The tradition of stone toolmaking continued into the 20th century in isolated parts of Africa, Australia and Siberia, but in the last couple of decades it has virtually disappeared as an everyday activity, except perhaps for the hide workers of Ethiopia, Brandt said.
Many Konso hide workers are elderly and have not taught the craft to their children, and some are beginning to abandon stone for bottled glass because they can more easily pick up pieces off the road instead of having to hike two hours for chert, he said.

Arguments now rage as to whether the real arrowhead should be cut out of Oetzi, who is kept in a freezer at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano.
It was only last year that researchers finally established he had a stone arrowhead embedded in his shoulder and that the nature of the injury - its position in an area full of blood vessels - probably meant he bled to death.
The presence in the body of pollen from the hophornbeam tree, which flowers in the Alps between March and June, indicates Oetzi died not in the autumn as first thought but in the spring or early summer.

This is not about hype as Stone has a smoky voice that reeks of a hard-lived life, which only shows that a great interpreter need to not have experienced what she sings about to make you feel it all the way down to your soul.
Stone's record company felt that it was best to drop this release of covers over a formal debut album of original material and I could not agree with their decision any more than if I had made it himself.

New evidence challenges image of Stone Age
If experts confirm the existence of the village, it could predate by as much as 5,500 years what is believed to be the oldest village built during the Jomon period in about 7,500 B.C., which was found in the Uenohara ruins in Kokubu, Kagoshima Prefecture.
But Inada said experts should not be too hasty in concluding that the finding is the oldest village in Japan, if not the world, because he believes other remains of villages may be older, although their dates cannot be confirmed due to the lack of decisive evidence.
Officials of the board of education said that they were able to date the remains by investigating stone tools found in the factory and because the remains were found in volcanic-ash layers from 11,400 years to 24,000 years old.
