Imagesetters are expensive and therefore are generally not found in homes or small businesses.
Imagesetters are an important part of the professional printing process.
However, an imagesetter is still necessary for very high-resolution images and photographs that are placed on paper for magazines or newspapers or to the film used to create printing plates for printing presses by printing companies.

creativepro.com - Endangered Species? The state of the imagesetter
Although the range of the imagesetter has been reduced significantly by the sexy new technologies of computer-to-plate (CTP) and computer-to-press printing, it is in no danger of going the way of the dinosaur.
Computer-to-press technology has taken a big bite out of the imagesetter marketplace-ironically, it has had its greatest impact on the newest segment of the imagesetter range, the 8-up imagesetters that produce fully-imposed printer's flats.
Even a 12-inch-wide imagesetter can deliver pages that can be stripped up to make any size plate and can be ideal for a printer with several different types of presses in the pressroom or for a service bureau that supplies film to different printers.
