Ali was born in Mecca, in the Hejaz region of northern Arabia, sometime around 599 CE (the year is an approximation only).
Ali's father, Abu Talib, was a member of the powerful tribe of the Quraysh, and an uncle to the young Muhammad.
The capital of the province of Syria, Damascus, was held by Mu'awiyah, the governor of Syria and a kinsman of Uthman, Ali's slain predecessor.

 Encyclopedia: Imam Ali Mosque
The Imam Ali Mosque, also known as Meshed Ali or the Tomb of Ali, is a mosque located in Najaf, Iraq.
Because Ali was also Muhammad's cousin, he is considered by Shiite tradition to be the first legitimate caliph, and the first Imam.
The Shia Imam is considered by the Shia sect of Islam to be the rightful successor to Muhammad, and is similar to the Caliph in Sunni Islam.

In the middle of the city there is the Shrine of the Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib [cousin of the Prophet] with its resplendent golden dome and minarets.
In 1991, Saddam damaged the Imam Ali Mosque because most of the people who rebelled and were part of the uprising against Saddam Hussain's government, were hiding in that mosque and they were taking it as a place of leadership.
Fighting around the Shrine of Imam Ali was intense during early August 2004, and the guerrillas used the nearby cemetery as their main staging point.

Amir al-Mu'minin, 'Ali (upon whom be peace) was the son of Abu Talib, the Shaykh of the Banu Hashim.
Therefore, 'Ali was the first man in Islam to accept the faith and is the first among the followers of the Prophet to have never worshipped other than the One God.

It is reported that Imam Ali recited the latter part of the following verse of Quran: "And when Allah took a Covenant from the People of the Book to clarify it to mankind and not to hide its (clarification); but they threw it away behind their backs and purchased with it some miserable gain!
As one example, Imam al-Baqir (AS) complained about the situation of the Muslims and their corrupt rulers, and said: "One of the manifestations of their rejecting the Book (of Allah behind their backs) (see Quran 2:101) is that they have fixed its words.
The Quran which was compiled by Imam Ali (excluding the commentaries) and the Quran that is in the hand of people today, are identical in terms of words and sentences.

On May 24, 2004, unidentified (Used as a bond in masonry or for covering a wall) mortar fire, in which U.S. forces were not involved, hit the shrine, damaging gates which lead to the tomb of Imam Ali.
On August 23, at least 15 explosions, many sounding like (Large but transportable armament) artillery shells, rocked the area, as (Shell containing lead pellets that explodes in flight) shrapnel fell in the courtyard of the gold-domed mosque and gunfire echoed through the alleyways.
The fighting was eventually ended by a peace agreement; although the neighboring buildings suffered considerable damage, the mosque itself suffered only superficial damage from stray bullets and shrapnel.

The shrine of Imam Ali is enclosed in a mosque in the city center named Al-Haidariya Shrine with resplendent golden dome made of 7,777 tiles of pure gold and two 35 meters high golden minarets each made of 40,000 gold tiles.
Historians say that the tomb of Imam Ali was first discovered around 750 AD (139 AH) by Dawood Bin Ali Al-Abbas, then built by Azod Eddowleh in 977; that it was burnt later and rebuilt by the Seljuk Malek Shah in 1086, and rebuilt yet again by Ismail Shah, the Safawid, in about 1500.
The facade of Ali's tomb, seen from the main or northern gateway, is richly beautiful- the gold tiles have darkened handsomely with age.

However this by no means takes way from the value of the Shia Encyclepedia which is a great work and I have relied on it in many cases (may God rewards those responsible for it's compiling).
Having said this, I like to call your attention to the fact that in my response I intended to argue that even in the case of such marriage it cannot be used as a sign of agreement of Imam Ali (AS) with Omar's Khilafa.
