Ja'far al-Sadiq was born Ja'far ibn Muhammad in Medina on April 20, 702.
He was the son of Muhammad al-Baqir, the fifth imam of the Ahlul Bait (Family of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.), and the grandson of Ali ibn Husayn, the fourth Shi'a imam.
Ja'far was considered by many followers of 'Ali to be the sixth Shi'a imam, however, the Shi'as were considered heretics and rebels by the Umayyad caliphs.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir succeeded to the throne of Imamat in 96 A.H., at the age of 39.
Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq, the son of Imam Muhammad al Baqir, was born in Medina in 83 A.H., during the Caliphate of the Ummayyad Caliph, Abdul Malik.
Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq died in 148 A.H., during the reign of the second Abbasid Caliph Mansur and was buried in the "Baqia" cemetery.
