The Pharcyde - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The members of the group are "Slimkid" (Tre Hardson), "Fatlip" (Derrick Stewart), Imani Wilcox, and "Bootie Brown" (Romye Robinson).
They signed to the influential Delicious Vinyl label in 1991 and soon released Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, which was critically praised though sales were lukewarm.
Then in 2004 after creating their own label (Chapter One) The Pharcyde (remaining members Bootie Brown, and Imani Wilcox) released the album Humboldt Beginnings.

The vocal chemistry of Imani and Bootie Brown was still potent last night, their timing perfect, their verbal sound effects like instant post-production.

Despite the loss of two of the four original founding members over the years, remaining members Imani Wilcox and Romye "Booty Brown" Robinson are proving that they're in it for the long haul.
When we ran into Imani at the Holiday Havoc/Rock the Bells festival, he was very enthusiastic (to say the least) to tell us exactly what he thought about eating meat and what he had for lunch.
A vegetarian for 10 years, Imani knows that not eating animals is one of the best things he can do for his health, the planet, and animals, too.

Imani, the group's other half, echoes the sentiment: "I'm not mad at it, but --" he pauses to hit a blunt, "yeah, it's a compromise."
The plaque testifies to the creative synergy of Tre "Slimkid" Hardson, Imani "Darky Boy" Wilcox, Romye "Booty Brown" Robinson, and Derrick "Fatlip" Stewart -- four very off-the-wall 19- and 20-year-old break-dancers turned MCs who lived, partied and made rap history together in an infamous hip-hop "flop" house called the Pharcyde Manor.
Imani and Romye say they'll shop for another indie to put out their next album -- including stuff that didn't make it onto Plain Rap, and stuff they deliberately held back.

An influential alternative rap quartet from South Central Los Angeles, the Pharcyde was formed by MCs/producers Tre "Slimkid" Hardson, Derrick "Fatlip" Stewart, Imani Wilcox, and Romye "Booty Brown" Robinson.
Hardson, Wilcox, and Robinson were all dancers and choreographers who met on the L.A. underground club circuit in the late '80s, worked together for a while, and served a stint as dancers on In Living Color.
After support slots for De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest as well as a successful spot on Lollapalooza's second stage in 1994, the group released its second album, Labcabincalifornia, which was calmer than their first but no less warped.

Imani relates deeply to rhythm and blues and wouldn’t mind dabbling in some collaborative efforts with his idols.

Wilcox and Robinson decided to keep The Pharcyde going, and are happy they did, although the past year has not been an easy one for the group.

Downstairs, the new wave and old school of '80s night thump against the wood floors and roughly hewn walls of Hell, while in Heaven the crowd waited for South Central LA's early '90s influential hip-hop group The Pharcyde.
The formerly four-man Pharcyde, touring on their most recent album, 'Plain Rap', as well as their recent reissues and 'Best Of' collection 'Cydeways', now consist solely of Imani Wilcox and Romye 'Booty Brown' Robinson along with a DJ and congas player, but that doesn't mean they had half the effect.
With Imani up front and Booty Brown hitting the high sing-song notes the group helped popularize (now carried on by successful acts like Jurassic 5), The Pharcyde are making the white girlz wiggle as the predominantly Caucasian crowd throw their hands in the air and show they cared.

Imani Wilcox and Romye "Brown" Robinson revived the Pharcyde - one of hip-hop's most influential groups of the 1990s - after the outfit lost Derrick "Fatlip" Stewart in 1997, and later Tre "Slimkid" Hardson, to solo careers.
In 1992, the four players released "Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde," which rode to gold, then followed it up with "Labcabincalifornia" in 1995, which didn't make the grade and started to fade.
After losing half his crew and having problems with record labels, Wilcox has taken the attitude of turning negative situations into positive energy.

 Fun side of Pharcyde
Ever since he and Imani Wilcox became the only remaining original members of the south-central Los Angeles hip-hop ensemble known as The Pharcyde, veteran fans kept bringing it up.
It was as if the exit of fellow Pharcyde founders Slim Kid Tre and Fat Lip in the late ’90s meant the end of the group’s funk-flavored grooves, earthy lyrical meditations and hysterical freestyling raps.
It was precisely that sense of fun that Robinson and Wilcox set out to recapture with the release of "Humboldt Beginnings" last summer.
