  John D. Imboden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Daniel Imboden (February 16, 1823 – August 15, 1895) was a lawyer, teacher, Virginia legislator, coal mine operator, and a Confederate cavalry general and partisan fighter in the American Civil War.
On September 9, 1862, Imboden left the artillery to recruit a battalion of partisan rangers and was promoted to colonel of the 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry (1st Partisan Rangers).
Imboden returned to the Shenandoah Valley and commanded a brigade in Robert Ransom's cavalry division of the Second Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia under Jubal A. Early in the Valley Campaigns of 1864.

Imboden organized the Staunton Artillery and, after the state seceded, led the troops as they took the US arsenal at Harpers Ferry.
Imboden fought at the First Battle of Bull Run, and organizes a cavalry command in 1862 named the 1st Partisan Rangers.

The Imboden farm was near the village of Fishersville and the Old Tinkling Springs Church, the oldest house of worship in the area, in a pastoral setting along a meandering stream.
Imboden had been appointed commissioner of schools in 1847, a continuing annual appointment that increased his standing and reputation, and had served as a presidential elector in 1848, a signal honor that greatly enhanced his status in the community.
Imboden ran for office himself and was elected in 1851 to his first two-year term in the Virginia House of Delegates.6 That winter he travelled to Richmond to begin his career as an elected representative of the people.
