Imitatio dei - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Imitatio dei (Latin, imitating god) is a religious concept according to which virtue among man is found by resembling God, to which man should aspire.
The concept of imitatio dei - generally taken to be a Mitzvah - in Judaism is derived, in part, from the concept of imago dei - being made in the shape of God.
Luke 6:36 states: "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." In Ephesians 5, he is told by Paul to: "Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children".

Jewish Education at the Lookstein Center - WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE OF GOD
The doctrine of Imitatio Dei is found, in one form or another, in other religions as well as in the writings of Plato, Aristotle and the Stoic philosophers.
In Aristotle the concept of Imitatio Dei is almost devoid of ethical content, being primarily intellectualistic in character.
It is the rejection of Imitatio Dei as the great goal of human existence, and the exploitation of knowledge for unethical ends.

The principle of imitating God is known in philosophic parlance by the Latin term "imitatio Dei," and in halakhic terms by the phrase "Ve-halakhta bi-derakhav" ("You shall walk in His ways").

If we are made in the image of God it follows that we should engage our lives in an imitatio Dei, "imitation of God." If we are made like God, it follows that we should act like God.
The verb "to rest" is sabat (Heb), meaning "to stop, cease." The noun form is sabbat from which we get our word "Sabbath." The seventh day came to be named by what Yahweh did on the first one-He stopped his work and rested in peace with his image bearers.

However, when man experiences humilitas Dei, he formulates not an ethic of triumph but one of retreat, sacrifice and humility.
