  Seven-Year War
The Seven-Year War (called Im-jin Wae-ran 壬辰倭亂 'Japanese Turmoil of the Im-jin Year') was the conflict from 1592 to 1598 on the Korean peninsula, following two successive Japanese invasions of Korea.
As the first step he launched a war against Korea, a vassal to China which had refused an alliance with Japan and denied the passage of Japanese troops through its country.
Farmlands were devastated, irrigation dikes were destroyed, villages and towns were burned down, the population was first plundered and then dispersed, and tens of thousands of skilled workers (celadon ware makers) were either killed during the war or taken to Japan as captives.

A riverboat captain, James Buchanan Eads, proposed to the Union government a fleet of ironclad riverboats, which essentially were civilian riverboats stripped down of their superstructures and covered with an iron-plated casemate protecting the paddlewheel and housing a dozen guns; he would further impress the government by producing 8 of these ships within 100 days.
The naval war was concluded the next year at the Battle of Weihaiwei, where the strongest remaining Chinese ships were surrendered to the Japanese.

Imjin War diaries are memorial of invasions for Koreans
During Korea’s two Imjin Wars against Japanese invaders—in 1592 and 1597—the Korean people endured incompetent leadership, famine, the destruction of their villages and bloody assaults that resulted in a “mountain” of pickled noses and ears of 38,000 Koreans placed on display in Osaka, Japan.
The Imjin invasions and earlier and later ones—chiefly the Mongolian in 1231–70, the Japanese of 1910–45, and the Korean War of 1950–53—have profoundly shaped Korean history and literature, Kichung Kim said in his Jan. 20 lecture “Survival and Abduction: Documentary Literature of the Imjin Wars (1592–98),” but the “most brutal” were the Imjin Wars.
Yu’s goal was to be “brutally honest about the mistakes the Korean leaders made before and during the war.” He charged that the Korean government had been foolish and negligent about Japan’s plans for war, ignoring the reports of its own envoys who reported on Japan’s plans.

In fact I'd go so far as to say at the beginning of the war the positions re equipment were exactly reversed with the US/South Korean side being at a vast disadvantage.

Although the war continued for another two years, no significant change was made in the policy developed between President Truman's decision to intervene in June 1950 and the beginning of Armistice negotiations at Kaesong in July 1951.

Etymological Origin of the word Imjin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The origin of the name Imjin may be traced to 1592, when, during the reign of Korean King Seunjo of the Yi Dynasty (1392-1910) the Japanese Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi, with an army of 158,000 men and a navy of 40,000 seasoned sailors, attempted to annex Korea as part of a larger campaign to intimidate China.
Koreans call it the Imjinwaeran (Imjin War), and often refer to 1592 as the Imjin year.
Bonfires were lit to keep track of the Japanese ground forces, and the number of fires lit (from one, meaning "all quiet" to five, meaning "the enemy has broken through and we are being overrun") kept the populace and leadership informed.

Although I did like the set-up of the first two chapters, I do wish the author could have explained more of how and why the Japanese were so superior in military techniques as opposed to the Koreans (ie-the Japanese were lifetime warriors after coming out of a feudal Japan, as opposed to the Koreans).
Ruining Korea, almost bankrupting Japan, and fatally destabilising the shaky Ming dynasty in China, the so-called "Imjin" war was an event of crucial historical importance.

Another indication of the essential failure of Japanese archery during the two Mongol Invasions in the 13th century is the fact that, after those wars, the bushi actually placed less emphasis on archery, and instead focused more on shock tactics with close weapons (yari, naginata, nagamaki, no-dachi, tachi, katana, etc).

The Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, known as the Imjin War, was one of the most tragic and traumatic experiences in Korean history.
The purpose of writing The Book of Corrections (Chingbirok), as the author professes in his preface, was to prevent similar disasters from taking place in the future.
His book, however, is much more revealing; it provides a lively perspective of the relationship, which has been often marked by conflicts and wars, of the three neighboring countries involved in the war—Korea, Japan, and China.
