Not realising it at the time but this was the point that we lost our path and as we walked beneath a thick blanket of walnut trees we mistook dried irrigation channels as paths and their crisscrossed routes soon had us lost between a maze of small fields.
We decided to follow the river down to Imlil, never a wise decision on most occasions however the river was low and left plenty of room to follow it down.
By eight o’clock we were showered and awaiting food in the hotel opposite the apparently empty and unused refuge in Imlil.

Most hikers choose to stay at the CAF refuge, which is open all year round and provides bunk beds, camping mattresses and blankets, as well as kitchen and washing facilities and luggage storage.
The walk to the base is enjoyable in its own right, following the Mizane Valley to the village of Aroumd (two and half mile from Imlil) and thence through the hamlet of Sidi Chamcharouch to the Toubkal refuge hut (8 miles from Imlil – 5/6hr in all), at the foot of the mountain.
Most people set out early to mid-morning from Imlil to stay the night at the main Toukbal refuge, setting out on the ascent at first light the next morning in order to get the clearest panorama.

The place you need to get into is IMLIL, 11 miles into the mountains on a rough road; pick-up vans and taxis shuttle back and forth from Asni, along with larger lorries on Saturdays for the Imlil souk.
The established trailhead for Toukbal, Imlil comprises a small cluster of houses, along with many provisions shops, a prominent CAF (French Alpine Club) refuge and several cafés.
A first stop in Imlil should be the "Shopping Centre", run by Lahcen Esquary, an experienced Atlas guide who speaks English well.

Dar Imlil may not quite have the location of the Kasbah but it is wonderfully situated on the outskirts of Imlil village near the river and looks up to the Kasbah and Toubkal summit.
We have been able to ensure that the build quality and fixtures and fittings are of a similar standard to the Kasbah and it is managed to a similar standard working with the local community as an integral part of its ethos.
Dar Imlil is situation 30 meters from the Imlil village hammam so anyone wanting to take a hammam does not have far to go.

It is possible to head West, then head over a pass further West (past the one for Imlil).
From there a damp river crossing will get you onto the main road between Imlil and Asni, where hitching back to Asni is easy.
