Ultimate Metal Reviews - Expanding Horizons: Black Metal / Immortal
Immortal has always concentrated their energy on the positive side, the realm of creating good quality, comprehendable fl metal music, and have never associated with any of the criminal activities sparked by such infamous names as Varg.
Immortal's music and image is deeply influenced by the 80s metal decade, by bands ranging from early extreme metal bands such as Possessed, Venom, Bathory, Slayer, and Celtic Frost to bands such as KISS, Iron Maiden, and Manowar.
Sometime in 1992, the band was approached to film a video clip of a song of their choice for a tv station, with an interview to follow on same day.

Immortal - Satan Stole My Teddybear
Immortal are the best among the Norwegian metal bands (I'm not getting into whether this is "true fl metal" or not: screw that), one of the few in the entire movement who actually have a lot of talent.
Immortal certainly isn't for those who like a little finesse or subtle touches with their music, but insofar as hyperspeed fl metal goes, this isn't too terribly bad.
Immortal contain in their ranks geniuses of composers and this is very marked here: this is majestic, anthemic, driven to speed and brutality by the nature of the album but restrained and melodic enough to make it an epic with a grand sadness at its core.

Immortal - Biography - AOL Music
Of all the Norwegian fl metal bands, Immortal has, arguably, stuck the closest to the mystical, occult-inspired vision of the scene: the bandmembers kept the evil-Kiss makeup throughout the band's existence, rarely experimented outside of the traditional guitars-drums-bass instrumental configuration, and never revealed their real names.
Preferring to remain a three-piece, the band recorded the Unholy Forces of Evil/The Cold Winds of Funeral Frost 7" for the French label Listenable Records in 1991, which eventually led to Immortal's contract with another French imprint, Osmose Records.
With an acute case of tendonitis in his arms, Demonaz could no longer play guitar with the speed and intensity Immortal required, and was forced to leave the band, although he remained the group's lyricist.

So many bands these days feel the need to write complex and technical songs, mostly outside and beyond the individuals’ musical skills, that the effort itself drags the music down to that “mediocre” level.
Immortal has truly raised the banner for Black Metal, bringing mastery of riff and quality production to the forefront of their music and laying low all pretenders and posers with the fierce weaponry wielded by these True warriors.

Brilliant however is the surgical orchestration of these simple elements with which Immortal achieve their power, inverting structures and suggesting a devil’s advocate to any conventional sense of harmony or melody.
The former, as the simpler of the two, is the broadest implementation with the difference between all guns blazing and the open mid-paced phrases familiar from their first album, as a basic range, covered in several layers.
An introduction of wind noises blown through some sort of insane PA distortion, with soft rising music in the background and chanting, sounds like a keyboard version of a soundtrack to a 50s war film and as such is the perfect introduction to the dissident music of the generation after the children of the 1950s.

This is how a true Black Metal band is meant to sound, if their aim is it to convey atmosphere and darkness.
