Sloan-Kettering - Summer Fellowships: 2005: Infections after Bone Marrow Transplantation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-12)
Patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation are highly immunocompromised and vulnerable to invasive bacterial, fungal and mycobacterial infection.
Immunocompromise in this patient population is multifactorial and depends on the type of transplant and the immunosuppressive regimen that has been given to prevent graft-versus-host disease.
Furthermore, the nature of immunocompromise changes as bone marrow engrafts and various cell populations return and become functional.

 Amoebiasis - Wikipedia
Symptoms take from a few days to a few weeks to develop and manifest themselves, but usually it is about two to four weeks
Most infected people are asymptomatic but this disease has the potential to make the sufferer dangerously ill, especially if there is any suggestion of immunocompromise.
Diagnosis of amoebiasis is confirmed by finding cysts in the stools of the patient.

 Fungal Airway Diseases
Almost all recorded cases of pulmonary fungal infection are secondary to local or systemic immunocompromise.
In the latter case severe immunocompromising disease such as the Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome of Arabian foals or the Fell Pony Immunocompromise Syndrome in young horses, or Cushing’s Disease in older horses, may be accompanied by infection with Coccidiomycosis immitis, Histoplasma capsulatum and H.
In these cases the underlying disorder may be obscured by the overwhelming fungal infection.

In late stage HIV infections pulmonary TB often resembles primary TB with infiltrating lung lesions with no cavitations.
In early stage of HIV infection (mild immunocompromise) the appearance is often classical with cavitations and upper lobe infiltration.
In late stage of HIV infections (severe immunocompromise) the appearance is often a typical.

Differential effects of chemotherapy-induced and HIV-1-induced immunocompromise on NK and LAK activities using breast cancer and HIV-1 seropositive patient populations.
This study contrasts the effect of chemotherapy-induced and viral-induced (HIV-1) immunocompromise on natural killer (NK) and lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cell function.
The ability of NK and LAK cells isolated from the peripheral blood of healthy controls, breast cancer patients receiving or not receiving adjuvant chemotherapy, and HIV-1 seropositive individuals to lyse K562 and U937 targets was determined.

An immunocompromised individual, or one who is at risk for immunocompromise, should be evaluated every six (6) months after the completion of a full course of anti- tuberculosis treatment for two (2) years.
If a pregnant woman is immunocompromised, or is at risk for immunocompromise, she should be evaluated every six (6) months after the completion of a full course of anti-tuberculosis treatment for two (2) years.
Isoniazid and rifampin (or isoniazid, rifampin, and ethambutol if susceptibility results are unavailable) should be given for at least nine (9) months, and for at least six (6) months beyond documented culture conversion, whichever is longer.

Prevalence of possible risk factors and screening for the prodrome using an accurate white cell count.
The immunocompromise syndrome in homosexual men in the USA is thought to be associated with cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and nitrite intake.
Mean accurate total and differential white blood cell counts, using the Haemalog D automatic white cell counter, were no different in homosexual men (and various at risk subgroups of them) than heterosexuals, suggesting that the prodrome to the immunocompromise syndrome was not present in the London clinic population.

However, a wide variety of other infections have been reported, particularly in association with prosthetic devices, implant, and foreign bodies in patients with varying degrees of immunocompromise.

Nocardia infection occurs in the setting of systemic immunocompromise of the cell-mediated type.
It also occurs with local immunocompromise, as with bronchiectasis in the lung and local trauma of the skin.
