  Immunogenetics Expert Joins USC
Immunogenetics and genomics specialist Ian Hutchinson has joined the USC School of Pharmacy, with a joint appointment in the Keck School of Medicine of USC as a professor of surgery.
Obviously, the ultimate choice rests with the physician, but if he or she knows that a certain drug isn’t going to work very well, then there is the option of choosing another one for a particular patient.
Hutchinson’s transplant work involves immunogenetics, in which he studies patients’ reactions to their transplants.

 Rheumatology and Clinical Immunogenetics
The Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunogenetics focuses its educational, research and patient care efforts on the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases.
The diseases include the many forms of arthritis; the connective tissue diseases (Scleroderma, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis); localized pain syndromes-tendinitis, bursitis and fibromyalgia; and metabolic bone disorders such as osteoporosis.
Identifying the genes, which predispose to these disorders, is a major step in identifying the cause and the development of effective treatments.

These tests are required for patients undergoing evaluation for organ transplantation, for patients requiring platelet transfusions from HLA-matched donors and for patients undergoing evaluation of conditions with known associations to particular HLA alleles.
The Blood Center’s Immunogenetics Laboratory was established in 1975 to provide HLA typing for platelet transfusion recipients.
The Puget Sound Blood Center’s Immunogenetics Laboratory continues to provide testing for organ transplants performed at Seattle’s transplant centers: Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, Swedish Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center and the Virginia Mason Medical Center.

The Immunogenetics Laboratory performs tests of various genetic systems including the HLA system, an array of cytokine genes, red cell antigens, and microsatellite markers as part of ongoing research in the immunogenetics of immune responses that contribute to transplant rejection, graft versus host disease, and the response to vaccines.
The Immunogenetics Laboratory investigates HLA factors that are associated with increased or decreased riskes for various diseases.
Identifying HLA antigens for clinical purposes is one of the mainstays of the Immunogenetics Laboratory.

Medical Genetics Institute - Immunogenetics and Transplantation
The HLA and Immunogenetics Laboratory at Cedars-Sinai supports all of the bone marrow and solid organ transplant programs of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
The lab performs serologic, molecular and flow cytometric assays for HLA typing, antibody screening and donor and recipient cross-matching for transplanting solid organs.
This testing allows the prediction of highly sensitized patients who would benefit from treatment with IVIG, rendering them more likely to receive a transplant than those who do not benefit from the treatment.
