 NGC - NGC Summary
An immunoglobulin M test should not be used to determine rubella immune status; immunoglobulin M is used to diagnose acute and recent rubella infection.
Rubella immunoglobulin M testing should be performed on pregnant women who report symptoms of rubella or susceptible pregnant women who might have been exposed to rubella to rule out acute or recent infection.
Pregnant women with negative immunoglobulin G and negative immunoglobulin M on first testing should be retested in 10 to 14 days; the first specimen should be reanalyzed along with the second specimen.

Anti-neutrophil antibodies of the immunoglobulin M class in autoimmune neutropenia.
Anti-neutrophil antibodies of the immunoglobulin M class in autoimmune neutropenia.
Anti-neutrophil antibodies of the immunoglobulin G (IgG) class have been implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune neutropenia, but few reports have described immunoglobulin M (IgM) anti-neutrophil antibodies.
Immunoglobulin M anti-neutrophil antibodies were found in adults and children with isolated chronic neutropenia and in patients with Felty's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, immune thrombocytopenic purpura, and human immunodeficiency virus.

eMedicine - Immunoglobulin M Deficiency : Article by Iftikhar Hussain
Selective immunoglobulin M deficiency (SIgMD) is a rare form of dysgammaglobulinemia characterized by an isolated low level of serum immunoglobulin M (IgM).
The absence of IgM in the presence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin A (IgA) has yet to be explained, as this appears to contradict the theory of sequential immunoglobulin gene rearrangement.
Normal mature B cells are expected to have IgM and immunoglobulin D (IgD) on their surfaces, and, with proper stimulation, rearrange their immunoglobulin genes to switch from expressing IgM to IgG, IgA, or immunoglobulin E (IgE).

Immunoglobulins primarily of the M and G3 classes, which in both normal and mev mice contain high levels of lambda light chain, are produced in excess in mev mice.
The cosegregation of the Leu-2 and immunoglobulin kappa (IgK) loci in hybrids with spontaneous rearrangements of chromosome 2 is consistent with the possibility that the Leu-2 locus is on proximal human 2p near IgK.

Pseudohypoglycemia With Monoclonal Immunoglobulin M Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine - Find Articles
To the Editor.-Monoclonal immunoglobulins, often of immunoglobulin (Ig) M class, have been noted to interfere with chemical measurement of total bilirubin, high-density lipoprotein, phosphate, urea nitrogen, creatinine, and total calcium1 but not with glucose.
An M spike (0.60 g/dL) was detected and subsequently characterized by immunofixation as IgMK.
True (reactive) hypoglycemia has been reported as a rare complication of a monoclonal immunoglobulin with anti-insulin activity,4 whereas laboratory pseudohypoglycemia has been caused by circulatory problems in conjunction with fingerstick sampling (shock, Raynaud phenomenon), leukocytosis with in vitro glucose metabolism, and M proteins that cause serum hyperviscosity and decreased sample aspiration.

 The Individualist: Immunoglobulin M
IgM forms polymers where multiple immunoglobulins are covalently linked together with disulfide bonds, normally as a pentamer or occasionally as a hexamer.
IgM is primarily found in serum; however, because of the J chain, it is also important as a secretory immunoglobulin.
For this reason, IgM is the first immunoglobulin expressed by mature B cells.
